-They are expensive due to their rarity so the few that are left have been beat to shit.

-They deal with the same basic problems that dsm's deal with, boost creep, balance shaft issues, and the basic 4g63 gremlins.

-They have resistors in the ecu circuit board that will "go bad" and spill acid all over the circuit board ruining it completely if you dont change them out.

-Being a 4g63 you HAVE TO CHECK THE TIMING BELT. I worked on these engines for a long time and one after another i kept hearing/ seeing some sick horror stories about belts jumping timing and decimating everything in the combustion chamber.

unless it is in pristine condition and maintained like a uptight bitch then dont look to be driving this as a daily driver, you will be working on it more than your supra.

DSM = DON'T START MODIFYING

they go to pieces if you do, unlike our toyotas that are overbuilt beasts, they made everything just "strong enough"

Um - VR-4's use the 6A12/6A13 engine - only the 80's models used the 4G63.

From what reviews of them we've had over here (they're special import only), people have been very pleased with them - and very stealthy cars. You dont expect a sedan that looks that boring to be able to waste you at the lights :D

the 4G thing must be US only then - seeing as both here, mainland europe and Japan, they were only ever 2.0 V6 TT (6A12TT) or 2.5 V6 TT (6A13TT). Then again - what years are you talking about? Cause we had them til '02...

its a DSM, so shit can go wrong pretty fast, but its like a 7m in the fact that if you build it right and take care of it, it will treat you right.

well my friend had one. It seemed slow. So after inspecting found that the exhaust manifold, turbo, exhaust downpipe were all cracked and leaking. It was too expensive to replace and he got rid of it. don't know which gen it was

greatest post of all time.... :rofl:

i agree that the DSM are less than stellar with their built quality but i dont think it would kill you to have it if you really like it. if you are willing to wrench on it from time to time youll be ok. just realize its not going to be the most reliable thing in the world

^ if you are willing to take the time to invest lots of money and attention to detail than it will treat you right. these engines have TONS of potential, look at Shep w/ his talon http://www.shepracing.com/

You can make AMAZING power with this platform because lots of people have laid down the ground work you just have allot to look out for. The transfer case in these cars is something else i forgot to mention.

Just make sure its in good condition but look forward to taking the engine out and overhauling it completely and changing all your fluids immediatley.

The last 4g63 i worked on was my friends, it snapped the balance shaft belt, so we installed the eliminator kit, replaced the bearings and oil pump, then the head gasket blew. So we changed it. New timing belt, metal HG prepped to perfection and ARP's. New turbo, new ex. manifold the works. Next thing... Timing belt skipped a tooth on hard shift.... i pulled the turbo off and peices of metal started pouring out of the headers... i pulled the head off and i could see through 3 of the pistons. the head.... oh god, valve stems got pushed through the head and up to the cams..... That was the end of that engine.

Its up to you.
