@post 832 By my watch that was 10 ticks in 9 seconds, or 1.1 ticks / second. So if we assume its caused by a cam event or cylinder firing, then the engine would have to be running at 133 rpm. I call BS on that. So whatever that noise is its not related to the main rotating assembly. Could be an accessory, a bad pulley, buggered up belt, or whatever else is running about 5x slower than the crank.

As someone noted, the air filter has a definite jolt everytime the tick is heard.
Just my $0.02.

I was thinking and talking about this last night also.

The engine speed was 400-450rpm at lowest and was bouncing too 550-600rpm whiteout me touching throttle then I would give it gas to around 900rpm

Also everyone ones opinion and thoughts are welcome and appreciated

Got a stethoscope?

Have you checked the valve clearance?

No stethoscope but I can get on.

How do I check the valve clearance ? I really don't want to break the seal on the head gasket.. Can I reuse the stock metal head gasket on the 1j ? Or will indeed to locate another?

I don't know what ISO speed setting your camera is at on your last vid with the noise, but, I swear when the timing belt marks pass over your intake cams side on the drivers side, is exactly when the noise occurs. I dunno just a guess. I think it may be degreed improperly I dunno I'm a nub. I also say your valve is so bent to point where you almost won't hear it anymore? Is that even possible? Would the engine even run?

The top vid, with the gopro. When you get in front of it and block the light, you cant really tell, but when it's just idling you can see it for a couple few revolutions.

Ugh, that brings shivers down my spine. I've seen what a piston skirt can do to a crank. We nuked my 99 yz 250 2 stroke once and the skirt went in between the crank and the connecting rod.

haha that just happened to my 1994 yz250 week ago

@Turbo Habanero

i had a loose nuts on my fan hub before and the engine also had a vacuum leak which caused a lopping idle and the loose nuts would create a similar sound. i believe the 1jz is speed density? so there is no such thing as a vacuum leak on those huh?

and if you wanted to look in your bottom end with out dissasembling there are fiber optic cameras at harbor freight that have lights on them. you could drain the pan and insert the camera into the turbo drain flange and have a look around, maybe have a buddy rotate the crank and look for anything interesting then upload this video to the SM.com
-or even look into the combustion chambers...etc..

jordan i honestly wouldnt open her up.. drain the oil and remove the filter. look for any metal shavings... if none then great. do a compression test, if it passes then check your accessorys for any bolts that could have come in contact with a pulley or something. if nothing turns up after all that then just drive the car and enjoy it.

Doesn't the motor have 264 cams? Are the not degreed?

The check valve clearance just need to pull valve covers and check with a feeler gauge. Can cause top end noise if there bigger than spec.

The 264 shouldn't make the motor interference either. So unless machine shop bent a valve no way that can happen.

Even if this happens we still have to figure out the loopy idle? I think there's a vacuum line we missed or something or the idle control valve is acting up. We'll be checking for vacuum leaks then maybe look into the IACV and try my block off plate on it and see what we can figure out.

The cams are in yet. They're on back order still. He has stock cams installed.

Tps been set?
Cam crank timing good?
Any codes?

Is it running better once warmed up?

Can't check for codes till tomorrow
the check engine light only came on when the motor was about to chug out. Flashed on then shut off

Tps has not been messed with

Not sure how to check the cam cranks timing.

What would happen if the cams were installed on the wrong side?

Exhaust cam on intake side and vise versa?

I doubt we did since we compared the to mine, but I suppose possible.

A lot of this stuff doesn't make since only because it comes and goes.....

First start up - noise was not there and idle was fine 15-20 sec of running time

Second start up - it was super noticeable and also when the idle went to shit.

Third startup - valve covers off couldn't find any problem noise was still noticeable after 25seconds of running it went away for 10-15seconds then came back

Fourth start up - was the go pro video at night

Fifth startup and last time it was started - at the machine shop

my moneys on the iacv, but im sure you guys will have that loopy idle figured out in no time. i was mainly talking about what id do as far as the "noise" goes.
