front bumper idea

i have been thinking about converting my front end to the 89+ but i was wondering if anyone has done, or has thought about doing a 88.5 front end. basically i want the larger intercooler opening and have a larger selection of front lips. i am thinking of getting an 89+ bumper and removing the center piece that sticks up and splits the front in half(dont know what you call it). this will keep the open area like the 89- bumpers but have the larger opening for the intercooler and lip mounting surface. obviously it will have body work to smooth/fill the area that was removed. the main reason i want it to be like "88.5" instead of just putting the 89+ bumper on and calling it a day is because my car is two tone and i do not think the center piece sticking up will look right since it wont blend together. just figured i would post and see what you guys think about this idea and whether i should keep it how it is, switch to 89 and call it a day, or try the 88.5 approach. thanks in advance.

Stock 89+ front end without the nose looks funny imo. Too round.
GRacer pulls it off with its angles though.

yeah, Martin P is in the middle of one, and A to the J was also in the middle of a similar project. It has been done to Greddy style bumpers as well...

nice, thanks. dont like how you can tell where its cut out though. i assume thats not totally finished. did you find that on here? i tried searching but..i never seem to be able to find what im looking for

you guys reply fast. i had thought about modifying a gracer also but i figured the 89+ would be easy/cheaper to obtain. unless you know of some cheap place to get aftermarket bumpers..

Looks ok if done right but there is a difference between the two styles even the top nose piece is different. The bumper after 1989 is rounder and not as square shapped.

If you want the Spec G which is the best front end out right now then I would do it.

you mean like the header panel? or after 89 they get even more round? i would like a spec-g but it will take a lil longer for me to get that...and i have another "surprise" im working on but i dont think it will work as well with the spec-g

Nope, the header panel never once changed...

The only changes were the addition of headlight squirters, the emblem and the header panel support...

Didnt know that, i thought there was a difference? Thats usually the first peice everyone lists when they are doing a fascia update project?

Yeah, many folks want the 91/92 panel because of the Toyota emblem when in reality its just a regular emblem with a body colored background that covers up the square indent from the 86.5-90 Toyota emblem...

The metal support is different because of the length of the signals and the nose piece...

It all swaps out though...

My take on the Modified 89on bumper, Yes you can use the 89on header panel(metal section) with pre89 lights the mounting holes are there, BUT you need to cut off the mounting lug for the 89on lights.

Its easy to do, But finding a decent adhesive to bond the repair section in place of the hump is hard(over here anyway).
I have also cut a jdm Bumper to lose the number plate surround holes, But the glue didn't hold as well, so It need re-doing, I might just buy an Aduct and use that instead of trying to hide the holes.

unless i could get a section correctly shaped it wouldn't look right, and the plastic on the bumper is flexible. So i cut a repair section from a spare rear bumper i had.

I have this to play with as well.
