To me, God is like Santa Claus...

A figure no one has ever seen (Saint Claus was actually real, I'm talking about the big fat guy in red), that performs impossible feats (can see you when you're sleeping, knows when you're awake, and knows if you've been bad or good), yet everyone knows HE'S NOT REAL...

older folks tell you from childhood that he is real and to do what he wants you to do, to get what YOU want...

the only difference is after a few years, we tell kids he's not real...

why isn't it the same way with God..?

:rofl: @ this thread.

Someone mentioned it - if you REALLY believe in your chosen faith, then someone disagreeing is not going to bother you.

I've met one - ONE - Christian that has done as he preached about.

It seems like I'm one of the few Christians on the site...

*backs out of thread slowly*

I am a spiritual Christian. I can give a shit less what some hitler youth in a funny hat thinks. He is no more holy than me, we are both mortal men. I find my way to God, I don't need some organization telling me how to do it.

I came into this thread as a Christian, and for a while thought I was alone. I thought was coming in here to see the OP get attacked. To my surprise, I am heavily outnumbered in here. I'm not educated or well spoken enough to argue. It does not hurt my feelings that people oppose my beliefs as long as they don't try to push theirs on me. I will not push mine on you in return.

Good lord, the Catholic Church is about as far as you can get from being a true Christian that you can get.

I consider myself a Christian, and even go to church, but I don't ally myself with any denomination, especially the Catholic church.

Most people see "The Church" as this horrible thing, it should be "The Catholic Church" since they are ones that where directly responsible for most of the atrocities, and are NOT the true church.

As a Christian, I mock the Pope and wish him struck down by God for believing himself closer than the rest of us...

Ive been rasied catholic, i went to a catholic school for 8 years...So i have a very good understanding of it all. My take on it, is that the bible was written to be a general guideline, and people turned it into rules over time. It would most likely be a nicer place if everyone tried to follow it, meaning not followed it 100% but tried. But nobody(esp the catholics) seems to understand that. They always treat it like it is some kind or rule book for life and if you break any of them you go to hell. And then nobody follows them anyway they just go to church and hope everything will be ok. I dont agree with any religion any more because they all take things way too far. And the pope certainly should have no say is what goes on in the actual rules of it all, he is there for guidance and wisdom. Every religion and their organizations need to lighten up a little.

Now on this particular topic, I've got to ask are you saying this because you believe it to be true, or are you parroting what you've heard?

The reason I ask is that, looked at objectively, the bible contains examples of far more bad behavior than good. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of examples of atrocities committed by supposed good, moral or holy men in this book compared to the examples of non atrocious behavior.

Start with Genesis.

Cain murders Abel, The Israelites kill Hamor, his son, and all the men of their village, taking as plunder their wealth, cattle, wives and children. God is unhappy with the wickedness of man and decides to do something about it. He kills every living thing on the face of the earth other than Noah's family and thereby makes himself the greatest mass murderer in history. God personally sees to it that Lot's wife is turned to a pillar of salt (for having looked behind her while fleeing the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah).

Move on to Exodus:

Moses murders an Egyptian.

God then reigns down devestation upon Egypt, the purpose?

  • to show that he is Lord;
  • to show that there is none like him in all the earth;
  • to show his great power;
  • to cause his name to be declared throughout the earth;
  • to give the Israelites something to talk about with their children;
  • to show that he makes a distinction between Israel and Egypt.

A plague of hail from the Lord strikes down everything in the fields of Egypt both man and beast except in Goshen where the Israelites reside. The Lord kills all the first-born in the land of Egypt. With the Lord's approval, Joshua mows down Amalek and his people. With the Lord's approval, a slave may be beaten to death with no punishment for the perpetrator as long as the slave doesn't die too quickly.

In Exodus 32:27 "And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour."

Care to move on to Leviticus? Numbers? Deuteronomy? Joshuah? Judges? Both Samuels? Kings? Chronicles? Isaiah? Jeremiah? Ezekiel? Hosea? Micha? Matthew in the new testament? Acts?

In each of these sections of your supposed good book, there are examples of such atrocious behavior by supposed "holy" and "good" men that it turns my stomach. My moral compass is superior to the idiots who put this mishmash of ignorance and superstition together.

Incest, rape, murder, genocide, infanticide, murder of pregnant women, prostitution of children, kidnapping, taking body parts as trophies, sex in public, eating feces and drinking urine, sexual contests, etc, etc. Quentin Tarentino ain't got shit on this book...

The list goes on and on and on. The book is more pornographic than it is prophetic in my eyes.

So once again, do you believe it (have you even read it? I have... ), or are you just saying what you've heard?

I personally like Gensis

Where Abraham is basically told to kill his son, Isaac, To prove that he does believe in "god". And then god comes down and saves the day by not allowing Abraham to kill Isaac.

How about Exodus 21:4

If his master give him a wife, and she bear him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself.

To add to Mike's quote of Exodus 32:27. The reason that they were asked to sword up and to slay everyone was because they were paying tribute to GOD via the golden calf. Intresting god to say the least.

So Moses and the sons of Levi did as they were told

Exodus 32:38

And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses; and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.

Exodus 33:5
And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Say unto the children of Israel: Ye are a stiffnecked people; if I go up into the midst of thee for one moment, I shall consume thee; therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.

my

a god insulting his own people.. How quaint!!

Exodus 34:14
For thou shalt bow down to no other god; for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God;

So a diety that is "omnicent/omnipotent" is a jealous. That means there are emotions there and I do not want to be there if he ever goes beserk!

well i wasnt commenting on the contents of the book so much as its idea. People treat it like a rule book rather than a more than likely fictional story book to teach morals, which it really is. No different than the tortoise and the hare, or the boy who cried wolf stories. I do agree with you though on the point that the things mentioned do involve sin, mostly in the old testament, but in the end it is still all to teach a lesson even if it is "never let us do that again". Thats why i said the people who practice it need to lighten up about it. And i mean if everyone tried to follow the commandments, and the generally "be good to thy neighbor" teachings, it would help the reader a little in making the right decisions.
