has anyone ever put one in their mkiii? a friend of mine is going to put one in his bmw m3 when he does an ls1 swap. i thought it would be cool because there is huge selection of gear ratios for those diffs and you can still kepp the irs setup.

If the stock gear diameter is 8.0 inches, and the Ford is 8.8, how will you mount that in the IRS? Fabricate a Ford IRS?

I would skip the BS and go 9.0 " if your going to go through the motions of swapping out the rear end you may as well do it right ... GO BIG OR GO HOME .... I understand that 8.8 "
is a good rear end but a 9" is going to be stronger and have a few more options available..

my $.02

Jason

P.S.
the 9" is available in IRS as well

the only reason to even switch to a 8.8 would be because its a solid rearaxel (not includeing T-birds and some cobras) so this doesn't make sense to me

9in isnt as good for a supra imho, sure it is stronger, but the input isnt centered. me and another guy on the celicasupra forum are looking at swapping in the aluminum 8.8in ford pumpkin. if my trutrac ever breaks that is deff what will be done. and even if it doesnt break ill likely still do the 8.8 diff swap eventually and put my 3.727 truetrac diff in the mk2 im planning on swappign to 1uz. the 8.8 is very stout and has tons of lsd's and forged gears available. plus the aluminum housing found in the lincoln mark 8's and cobra mustangs(both are irs) should end up creating an overall weight savings.

so you planning on making something stupid like 2k hp? the 8.8 diff will hold over 1k easy with a forged gearset and spool. so why go through the hassle of the 9in which doesnt have a center input and would have to be offset to the side etc? why make things more dificult then they have to be? just so you can say you have a ford 9in diff instead of a 8.8in diff?

rotating mass is rotating mass.... this is my opinion ... And yes I would build it to handle 2000 hp so at my measly 850 hp I would never have a problem... well almost never

IJ said he wouldn't ever do it again, he would simply mod the stock one to have an oil pump that would get enough oil to the pinion bearing...

What doesn't make sense? An IRS is a very good handling suspsension. By its design, it tries to fight squat and other forces. It make for a very balanced car.

But that doesn't help you launch at all, it fights it. I can see it for drag purposes.

The reason i said it didn't make sense was because i was under the impression that the car is being built for drag racing and in that case the irs would be a bad idea.

i have a mk2, it is a 7.5in diff. and the ford 8.8 irs diff is stronger thne a mk4 diff and MUCH cheaper, especially when it comes to lsd options and forged gears.

Nobody ever idid that swap

An Mk4 diff on a Mk3 frame

It does not bolt on the frame

an 8.8 or 9" wont bolt up either.

The stock rear has proved to be plenty strong where as ive seen people blow up stock 8.8's on 300 horsepower with a good clutch and sticky tires, Ofcourse thats stock.

I dont think theres a reason to change unless your looking for a solid axle. if thats the case why not a toyota pickup 8" rear. same everything and most likely same pinion flange too. Gears, and lockers aren't that expensive for it either.

Since there mostly open rears you can get a powertrax lock-right for 200-300 bucks and when you launch you have a full spool.

You mean the stock Traction Lok unit gave up, not the gear. It takes more shock load than a 302 engine and 4.56's to break a gear set. Assuming you don't have a factory defect in the casting process with heating or something.
