Feeler: Wider sawblades, possibly 17's?

There are a few things wrong with the factory supra sawblades.
16"
7" wide
+37 offset
23lbs.

Out of sheer curiosity I contacted a shop that does wheel customizing. They modify wheels for Porsche race cars that have been running around tracks all over the country for years without problems.
Any aluminum wheel can be modified to any width up to 15" wide and even narrowed down to 3" wide.

They can also add up to 1" to the diameter of the wheel. 17x9 +30 sawblades anyone?

There are several different options on what to do as far as wheel modifying so lets begin the discussion. What would you guys like to see?

Prices range from $200 - $600 per wheel depending upon the amount of modification.

i would love the 17x9's, but how much weight would it add? and can they make these damn things easier to clean?

Working on creating a photoshop image of what a 17x9 sawblade would look like.

I don't know about easier to clean, that's just the way the sawblades are.

I don't think that the 17" modification would add much weight as they practically remove the entire rim and weld on an aftermarket type rim as if it were a 2 or 3 piece wheel, only welded together. The rim thickness on these type of barrels are thinner than the factory cast wheel, so weight may not go up as much as you'd expect.

Theres thousands of better looking and/or lighter rims out there, if sawblades were available, they wouldnt be on my shopping list.

IMHO for $200-$600 per wheel, it would deffinetly not be worth it, thats just to much money to put into an already ugly wheel. Even if it was cheap to mod them, I still wouldnt waste my time with them. Much better wheels can be bought for that price.

For MKV TT wheels, it might be worth it to get the fronts widened to make a square setup. Understeer FTL.

Not many people want to split a set of them...

I've been considering getting my sawblades widened to ~10 inches with a +10 or so offset for a while now but it's cheaper to just buy some fn01r-cs =\

Seen it done a lot on GN wheels to keep the vader look.

For that sleeper look it would rock.

There was someone on SupraForums that did this to some MKIV fronts. He narrowed them to 5" to fit some skinnies on it. This is the only practical thing I can see, as there are not many narrow wheels that will fit flush on our cars without spacers and longer lugs. (ccw drag pack is the only thing that comes to mind)

Who wants to advertise that it might be a hopped up car without backing it? (Ricers excluded)
And I like the stock rims. But I've never had the pleasure of rocking them cuz they didn't come on my car
Plus the cost of tires...

Guess we know the general concensus.
I was just thinking about it, as I recall there were a lot of people who said they would keep the sawblades if they were bigger, wider, better offset, etc. Fine with me though. I don't mind, just thought I'd ask if anyone were interested as it would make a very unique setup.

I would consider widening the 91-92 5 spokes. I LOVED my 92's 5 spoke wheels. They fit with the supras' shape and style perfectly.

Its a cool idea, but not worth the cost... I see the only market for this being someone who wants a sleeper look.

But i may keep this in mind to have my front wheels made wider in the future....
