It takes more than "a little bit of time and money" to bring a junk yard condition car back to presentable shape. Restoring a Supra that needs paint, lot of body work, probably interior work and replacement, suspension work, and engine work will add up to over 10k easy. Easy. I can buy a running clean JZ swapped car for less than that.

my car is being built to hustle people, the crappier it looks on the outside, the more money people are willing to put down. i already got a brand new car that looks nice, the supra is just for messing around on the weekends.

i have the tint ripped halway off the windows, dents, dings, scratches, fading, trim messed up etc... it just looks like an old worn out car that a guy in a trailer park owns and don't really have the money to put in it to make it fast ;0

Just like a guy in a new porsche doesn't need to race to prove anything. The car speaks for itself. I have never understood the "sleeper" concept. Is it supposed to be more impressive when a hooptie ride beats someone in an street race versus the same win in a nice, sharp looking car? I am willing to bet if all your money is in the drivetrain, you are still rocking the stock brakes, worn out suspension, and ghetto tires. Not the safest thing to do, but its your car. I could be wrong, post some pics of your car along with your mods.

The fact that their owners are actually on this site trying to learn about their beasts is a good sign. It’s the attitude that I think counts the most when it comes to these cars, if your supra looks like shit then fine, but as long as you love the car, keep it on the road and keep planning that dream build, it’s better than having a fairly presentable car but not giving two damns about it. That’s just me anyway.

Maybe it’s because A70s are rarer over here than there, but I do feel a slight sadness when I see or hear of a supra being broken for parts and the shell being crushed. With just a little bit of time and money they could be such awesome cars, but their owners either can’t be arsed to put the work in, or don’t know the potential these cars harbor.

I think that one day, when there are only a couple of hundred A70s left on the streets and it’s achieved true “classic” status (A guy can dream can’t he? ), those people who killed off their A70s back in the day are going to feel it, at aleast that's what I tell myself everything I see a "Parting out" thread...

I agree to an extent, but it happens time and time again that a kid gets a MKIII that is in dire need of repairs because it is cheap and its a turbo car. He spends what money he can on the engine to make it fast. Corners are cut due to budget and nothing is done to a high standard. The engine ends up blowing or the guy cant afford the routine maintenance of the vehicle. We end up with another MKIII that is ragged out with a blown engine. Now we have another MKIII on its way to the junkyard that is eventually crushed like the OP stated. The clean MKIIIs will stand out and maybe the value and demand for these cars will increase. I went all over Florida looking for my last MKIII. The condition of what I mostly saw was sad. Very sad......

There's a couple of junkyards in Fort Worth that I frequent and the manager told me he will not crush any supra. He said there is always somebody coming to pick something off of them. I guess when they get down to bear metal he might but I appreciated his appreciation for supras.:icon_bigg

On the other topic floating around in this thread. I'm fixing my car up so people will come to me and say "wow, what a nice looking car". I want it to run good but looks are more important than the quarter mile. I was always getting comments and thumbs up from people while driving down the road in my 85 Celica GT-S. It was bone stock and a Corolla could blow it off the road, but damn it looked good.

lol.. have you actually raced for money or is that what you tell your self when you look at in the driveway?

i just bought this supra a month ago and i tore it down competely, the engine is at the machinist and i'm in the process of building my first turbo car. this whole thing is just an experience for me because i'm tired of rebuilding motorcycles.

all of my money isn't being spent on the drivetrain, but none of my money is being spent on aesthetics

Well...I didnt know there would be this many comments, but it seems that I'm not the only one that feels the same way. Yes, it was eventually going to happen and it's just a car. But just because it's a Supra that I was stripping it's parts of didnt mean I cared. Just means that I didnt have the money to save it, cause it was pretty decent for being in the yard. In any case, thank you all for commenting.

I feel the same man. I'm only 16 years old and my 89 turbo got in a crash and it looks like hell. But i've been puting it back together and it looks good. My dad and I have been fixing it and even though its alil old and has lots of miles I love my car with all my heart and I will make it look good and run even better.
