A newbie's thoughts.

I have been lurking here for a while. I really only post when absolutely necessary or I have something pertinent to contribute. But that is my preference.

Here is a story:

Since I am a motorcycle owner I used to frequent a particular forum/site for years. Slowly the same things that shaeff stated started to happen. There were several warnings from the site operator (it was only one guy and he did it as hobby). Over the span of several months it got really bad. The forum was literally a SPAM pit. Something bad must have happened one day because the site was shut down inexplicably by the operator.

Shortly thereafter I found another site, subscribed and lurked for while to feel the place out. One night, while workng on the bike while tired and in bad light, I accidentally crossed the + and - cables on the battery cables and the battery and shorted out something on the bike's electrical system. I posted my situation in detail on the site and within 2 hours I got back replies from 2 of the "old schoolers" and maybe a mid-level guy. 2 of the solutions were dead-on and the other was close. I was impressed. Very professional group. One of them even followed up to make sure everything went OK. Maybe they realized I was a nugget. I would have been beaten down severely on the other forum for admitting such a mistake before receiving the solution.

In my opinion and the point I am trying to make is that a good forum must be policed once in while to remain helpful and a ready source of good information, especially for the new guys like me. A little professionalism for the must part is helpful. BTW, I prefer this forum to SF.

Sorry to be so long-winded. I'm just a newbie who wanted to speak his mind.

so let me understand this, AS SOON as you shorted it out, you asked for help on the forum?

Not an insult to you, I'm not talking to you but using an example. I find this a much bigger problem
with society today. Why have people become so lazy?

I've been told I have no sense of humor, so I'm not worried about this at all.

:)

As far as "inside" jokes go, I'm generally the last to know or care what's going on, so no worries there either. ;)

Talk about Supra's or bikes, and I'm happy as a clam.
(Talk about everything else on the off topic..)

Actually, you scare me when I see you post. Seriously.

I'm trying to figure out what the "inside" joke is... or do certain people just feel left out?

Personally I wish more 24hr bans were handed out. For the reason posted and others. The rules of the site are clearly posted and made available to anyone who takes the time to read it.

Im sick of people thinking this site is their own personal instant messenger. Im thankful the Mods are trying to do something about keeping this place under control.

I like the system they have on nasioc. It's points based, and you have 24 of them. You get a certain number of points for certain infractions, then the slowly fall off with good behavior. If you hit 24 points, you are permanantly banned.

I wish I'd get banned from here so I could go out and get laid or drunk or arrested for stealing inflatable Santas or something. Man, I'm here WAY too much, I actually know what he's talking about.

No, I spent about 15-20 minutes self-troubleshooting, but could not find the trouble spot. I then posted for help. The Ducati owners or shop manual does not have in depth troubleshooting schematics. I have owned the bike for over 5 years and I perform most of the maintenance myself, but was baffled by this one.

No insult taken. I should have been more specific.

This place is a resource, it is a giant encyclopedia with thousands of opinions to it also. Not everyone magically figures things out themselves just by doing the shit. This place can be used to compare parts and inquire on mysterious ones. I find it tough to believe that when that comes to mind you dont ask someone but instead you just do it. The purpose of this forum isnt for all the postwhores to come here and screw around in, if they want that then thats why there is an offtopic section or even go to OT.com I dont care.

How is being resourceful and inquiring for information lazy?

Being resourceful would involve searching, not posting "how do I fix this", or "what is this hose" when you could easily pick up a tsrm and figure it out. Sure I've asked many questions myself, but come on... try to figure it out first.

When I first got my 1jz running, it had a horrible misfire and was running super rich. I tore apart the entire wiring harness, resoldered everything, redid all the shielded cables, put it back and after 3 days of debugging, the problem was still there. Then searched and searched and search, nothing. Then i posted for help, and nothing good. So I had to go back and do more wire cleaning, changed plugs, played with different plugs, gaps, tore apart the COP's and finally fixed the problem after another 3 days. Searching the forums and asking questions was pretty much useless.

You're right that many times people don't try to solve things for themselves. However you bring up an interesting point. How much nicer would it be when searching to come up with a couple well-answered threads (rather than 20 threads with the question asked, but then chatter as reply). Basically searching is a lot more efficient with more signal/less noise...

Having some discussion and humor in a thread is all good and great but as shaef said, it does get REDICULOUSE holy shit, i try to read a maftpro thread and find a smiley spinning arround filling up the whole screen and 3 people talking about their post counts followed by "rofl ftw ftw ftw lon pwned gtfo stfu lol ftw" People that have been members for about 2 months with post counts higher than IJ's and thread titles that read "this dude ftw" "jeff lange is a .." "im bored" "i suck at life lets talk about it in the tech section" or "am i awsome"

I go to supramania because theres less bs that i dont want to read compared to sf and because we are supposed to be discussing the mark 3 supra. Not post counts.

Yeah, I hafta agree about the signal:noise ratio.
While I definitely agree w/ Matt that we need some personality and life, in the Tech section I think that could be expressed better w/ the way the *answer* is crafted, not omitting the answer. I'll admit, I've done my share of participating in some of the whoring, but I also have posted a lot of really simple questions that prolly could've been answered by an efficient search. The problem is that the search ceased to be efficient. There were a lot of OT posts, and also the key terms for my problems seemed to come up a lot but in unrelated ways. I'm exceedingly busy and don't have *hours* of time to go filtering thru search results. If there is someone who knows the answer off the top of their head, then I'm hoping they'll drop by an tell me. I don't expect anyone else to go off spending ab hour trying to solve my problem. I just don't have any mechanic experience yet, and don't have hours on hours to go digging thru useless crap, so I'm sure postwhoring contributes to other people posting up noob threads as well.
(BTW sorry for my noob threads, I do have quite a few, my apologies.)

Annnywaaaayyys, I totally support the mods cleaning up the gen disc & tech sections, but I feel thee OT is getting a bit over-modded. Just my .02

I agree that the useless annoying posts have gone up, but also that the number of people who will attempt something on their own and talk about their experience has gone down. There are some people who seem to want you to virtually go their house through the internet and do the job for them.

Non stop tech can get boaring, especially since there is very little new tech actually being discussed on this forum, but on the other hand there are people who should be chatting on AIM that are using this forum instead.

The way I see it is that if you have no personal experience, no knowledge to share, and no pics to show, then you should do more reading then posting.
