"Spare" undertrays are about as rare as hen's teeth. Mine's nearly wrecked, so I'm always on the lookout. So many people pull it off to get to something else, then never put it back on, and toss it. Then they figure out that it's necessary, and go looking for one, so if there's one on any cars in the wrecker, they disappear fast.

I'd have made one from fibreglass by now, but I keep thinking that there's got to be a better solution...

I believe its time to go to the junkyard. Apparently however they're still available from Toyota, I wouldn't mind snagging a few :p

Would a open or no thermostat. Do the same thing?

No, the problem as already mentioned is that the coolant wouldn't absorb as much heat. To give a little more technical explanation, the lower cover creates low pressure behind the radiator, forcing the air through. Otherwise, it would spill over as IJ said.

If I was home I would stop by and look at it, free of charge. Of course, I won't fix anything free of charge, save for the inlaws. (for the OP)

Do you live near St. Louis?

I'll take your word for it...I think I'm going to bit the bullet and call the dealership about a replacement under tray
That and a Block test kit would be my first step in diagnosing this.

Buy some big diameter stainless steel washers (minimum 1 inch with a 6mm hole or 1/4", also 12x m6x 1.0 pitch Stainless 20mm long bolts to hold your new tray in and reduce the chance of trashing it in the furure.)

As I said earlier the tray is good for about 5c difference at highway speeds, IF a cooling system is marginal it might be just enough to tip it over into H...

Marginal could mean blocked/bent fins in the Rad or AC core, partially blocked tubes in the rad, erroded waterpump impeller and or missing blockers around the radiator.

People shouldn't assume because their car is fine running xx configuration that everyone's should be fine.

Nah no harm done, Gary is a Crotchety old fart like me, he somehow avoided being roped into trying to herd cats here (Moderator) I sadly didn't ;)

He is however one of the more knowledgeable guys on Supra Mania and over the years has provided brilliant technical assistance to members, I can understand his frustration at times trying to "Put Brains In Monuments" as a LOT of our members are resistant to learning on any level.
