dejacky said:Thanks for the good discussion folks . How about Stinger EMS vs. Maft Pro? Pros & Cons?
dejacky said:Since I want to go stand alone EMS soon, I'd like to get some input from some of you more experienced folks. It seems like there is a lot of EMS options out there, so with everyones help, I want to get the one that is right for me.
Costs
Megasquirt II v3: $410 (lifetime warranty, map sensor, & completely assembled)
Stinger: $950 (map sensor)
AEM EMS: ~$1,200 (needs sensors)
Any other recommend MAP-conversion EMS's?
I've seen several tuners use the knock sensing feedback control on the AEM EMS (auto retards timing if it sees certain amount of knock to prevent detonation) equipped 2JZ cars. I've seen this become quite useful when doing pump gas street tunes on turbo'd 2JZ-GE distributor based cars. Megasquirt and AEM both have knock feedback control, but Stinger EMS does not have it. Since the Stinger EMS (being sold by bigaaron from driftmotion) does not use a knock sensor, what other tuning parameters are we supposed to use to safely maximize power on pump gas tunes?
The updated Megasquirt 2 can also control vvti now, so that's a plus. AEM also has traction control + automatic transmission control and I'm pretty sure Megasquirt and Stinger ems lack these features. Since my 2JZ-GE car is a manual transmission, which EMS do you recommend that is best bang/buck for me?
How are your friends Haltech powered cars running and do you have any experience with the Halwinx tuning software?QWIKSTRIKE said:Where would anyone find a new AEM for 1200.00. You don't need sensors if you use the stock MAS. I was looking for a cheaper solution to purchase an after market ECU. I found that a group of companies make that solution. When I began to look at options offered and cost effectiveness I found the higher cost units were better suited. At first I was looking into the Microtech. It was a nice basic unit, but to make it work you needed to keep adding on cost for items needed. It comes with a 2 bar map, and to upgrade to a 3 bar or more map you had to send the unit in to have that changed if it wasnt ordered at the time of purchase. That cost up to 300.00 more to get done plus down time with the unit in transit. The bare basic unit was cheap but to get all of the features close to AEM cost more than an AEM. I was going to get a Wolf AEM unit but didnt know of a tuner close by so I decided on a haltech since my friends were running them in their 7ms. I finally found a wolf installer close by, and chose the wolf v500 which my car is geting ready for an install. I needed to get my LS2 coils mounted on a bracket, and then I am going to see if it's All that I think it is. The unit cost me 1735.00 shipped to my door in 4 days. That price includes a new wire harness, and a dash display that shows what the engine is doing in real time. It even can be programmed in real time from that display. It has more features than many of us will ever use including traction control. So don't just look at how cheap a unit is, but look at the features, and how it can be utilized in the future if more upgrades are needed. I also deicided on the Wolf AEM beacause if I decided that I wanted to go 2jz I dont have to sell it cheap to get another ECU. This ECU will work on any application period! Not to mention it will work with your stock sensors if you so choose to keep them.

Mild knocking can occur without causing any damage. It is a risk, and risks damage if not corrected right away, so I feel that knock-sensing is a good last line of defense.figgie said:the notion of "knock" sensing is just as silly as a "rod bending" detection, "hole in the piston" detection or the best one I can think of, "Car Crash" detection. Sure as hell not a fail safe when the event MUST occur in order for the detection to take place. Amusing to say the least
The E-11 v2 is a very good EMS at a very reasonable price. they also just came out with the new software and firmware upgrade which now has vvti controll, autotune and more. between me and my friends we have just about every haltech ecu around and they all are running great. Haltech is also currently working on a new line of ECU's. For a supra I would at least run an E8, the E6X is a good ecu but for just a little extra coin the E8 has more features and better software.QWIKSTRIKE said:They are runnimg very strong....I highlt reccomend the E11v2
What do you think of the Haltech E6GMX? It seems like it has everything I need and HalwinX software seems simpler to tune compared to Halwin for e11v2. Also, is there anyway to create a connector so the haltech can plug into the stock harness (1jz, 2jz, etc)?SD2JZA70 said:The E-11 v2 is a very good EMS at a very reasonable price. they also just came out with the new software and firmware upgrade which now has vvti controll, autotune and more. between me and my friends we have just about every haltech ecu around and they all are running great. these guys sell the plug and play harness for the 7M to the E6X or the E-11dejacky said:What do you think of the Haltech E6GMX? You could always apply the same tuning parameters with AEM to any other EMS. :naughty:Zazzn said:i will always push the AEM simply because i don't want to reinvent the wheel... SP / Titan/ WOTM/ BL yada yada... all have experiance with not only the supra but the AEM and have thousands of hours of tuning on them.
How many have they had on the wolf, stinger ect...
I don't want to pay them while they learn on my car... I will pay them for a tune....

Most guys that tune do exactly that from what I have researched. I havee heard of many peoples cars getting blown up during a tune from alledgedly good tuners. Only a seasoned handful really know how to tune. Take chevyeater for example. He is a master mechanic for GM, and emission tunes, and trouble shoots. When he tunes he knows why the emissions, and sensors are doing what they are doing. He knows how to tune every aspect of the car, and sensors to make the ECU do what it's suppose to do. Where as your basic tuner just tunes based on a feeling, or taught afr ratio's, and usually don't know all of the aspects of each sensor, and parameters of emissions tuning. IJ is that same kind of guy, and he convinced me to go Wolf v500. I am fortunate enough to have one of the top Wolf tuners that was listed on the Wolf web page to live 25 minutes from me, and he has done many 7ms. In fact one 7m did 11.6 at one of my Englishtown meets.:naughty: :biglaugh:

wolfV500 with display for $1.735 i will go that route if anyone got a 1jz running with it.
if it is compatable with 1jz sensors and you dont need extra trigger wheels and sensors etc.
my second pick for this is AΣM stinger Stinger 4424
second because wolf looks like it haves more inputs outputs and wolf comes with a display optionaly and the stinger doesnt have knock sensing part of it.
