Well, I've never raced my supra before, but I have played around with my DD ;).

Last summer I was on the William Natcher parkway comming home from work. I normally drive the speed limit, which is 65 on that toll road. The right lane sucks on it (just recently had about half of it repaved) so I usually stay in the left lane (2 lane BTW). I looked in my rearview and there's a red 3000GT coming up on me in the right lane going around 70-75. I gear down to 4th and stay along beside him and check out the car to see if it's a VR4. Doesn't appear to be so this should be a pretty even match.

My car has an Injen catback (2.75" exhaust) and an Injen Racing Division CAI (can be switched to ram air at any time, don't really know what I had it set to at that time), and a B&M adjustable short throw set to ~45% throw reduction, the rest is all cosmetics (dual halo projectors and new chrome light housing all the way around with all light bulbs replaced with LED plug in units).

The 3000GT apeared stock. I don't know my exact power but should be around 175-185 HP to the wheels with about 180-195 torque. The 3000GT has the same type of engine as mine, 6G72, except his is a DOHC whereas mine is SOHC. Mine redlines at 6100 RPMs and his should be around 7K. Displacement is the same, but he may have a bigger piston with a smaller stroke, or Mitsu may have lowered the redline due to the engines tending to go out on 3000GT when reved much.

Any ways, we were side-by-side, I looked at him, he looked at me, I pointed between us and made a motion with my hand as if taking off. The guy (early thirties) looks straight ahead and I can hear his engine being geared down. I leave it in 4th, but could had been reving it out in third if I wanted. We both floor it, he starts inching away from me. I let off the accelerator just a tad. For some reason my car makes a little more power this way up until about 5500K (weird huh?). My engine starts peaking in torque when I hit a lil over 4K and it starts getting throaty sounding. All of a sudden he stops creeping away (he had about half of his nose in front of me) from me and I start walking away from him. I shift into 5th and a couple seconds later I hear him do the same. By this time his nose is at my bumper and we're going ~125. I look into my rearview and he starts inching up on me again. I put my pedal back down on the floor (still a lil off of WOT after the shift) and I start gaining again. At ~140 I'm about 2-3 cars ahead of him and he's still not letting up. My engine's singing to the tune of about 4.5-5K and still climbing. I figured if he doesn't want to let up, might as well rub it in. We keep going and I'm about 5-6 cars ahead. I look at my speedo and It's maxed out at the 150 mark. I let off, this is the fastest I've my car to, or any other period, but I've been faster in my dad's mustang before on this very same road.

By the time this all occured I was almost at my exit ramp. He pulled up beside me and I gave him the thumbs up. He gets this big ass grin on his face and does the same. We pull over and had a talk for a couple of minutes. Turns out this guy worked at a local Mitsu dealership and was absolutely convinced that I had more done to my car than I told him (same mods as above) because he thought the newer 3G's were factory limited on speed :biglaugh: . I told him no, the comp's never been touched (and hasn't). I asked him how fast he was going, he said he made it up to 140, but couldn't go any faster than that. I told him my speed and he seemed very impressed. He later told me he also had a VR4 and we should run them sometime :nono: . Glad I didn't catch him driving the VR4 that day :aigo: .

I think mine would BHG during the race ;). It's already got RK from the dumbasses when did the last two BHG repairs on it before I bought it, that's why I don't drive it.

Despite all the backtalk and hearsay people toss out about 3/S's...

They are AMAZING cars to drive.

I don't want to hear the BS excuse, "But they're so heavy"...

Not much heavier than a MKIII! I miss mine sometimes...:icon_conf

('95 SL w/ Single Turbo conversion)... Also, I could take mine passed 7,000rpms...I think it was like 7400.

Good kill, though! 6g72 FTW. ;)

A few weeks ago I met the same guy on the same road except we were both heading to work that morning. We both knew the outcome of the race, but we played tagalong all the way to work doing +80 on this parkway (passing people like they weren't moving, you just don't speed around here ;)).

I was probably8-9 cars behind him and we were on the last stretch before the parkway ended. I see this little puf of smoke come out of his tailpipe as he gears down, so I do the same and off we go. I already knew I wasn't going to catch up to him, but what the hell. Sure enough, neither of us gained any ground, so it's a pretty close race until you get up in speed, then my car starts walking away.

Lol, good stuff. If this keeps i suspect he will get smart and do some research and gets some mods.

Im with ya here. My best friend owns a dual cam sl and were prob doing a single turbo swap...although the kit is 8k i believe. Isnt worth it in my opinion, but he hates the rear turbo and how you cant access it. So i guess twin turbo may be out of question. The difference between 6 and 4cyl cars is...6cyls can overcome their weight ;)

It's all about the Power to Weight ratio. :icon_wink

I hate the word, "kit". It has become the generic word for people to lean to when they don't know where to go for stuff.

You DEFINATELY don't need $8,000 to turbo a 6G72. I had my single mounted nice and snuff right in the engine bay....and turbo excluded, I probably spent $2,000 sourcing parts together.

Ya, this is his first 3kgt and hes just looking for an easy way to compile everything together. Those cars arent cheap at the same time. So you ran just off the front bank? He was considering that. The kit hes looking at has a custom y with tubular headers and the turbo up front. The pipe routing is rediculous, i think he should go tt. The "kit" is ceramic coated, tig welded and everything. Someone running a gt42r put down 642whp easy. Problem is my friends is fwd, so we need an awd tranny to hod that power in fwd mode. lol i find that a waste of money.

True.

But might I say, 642 horsepower to the front wheels with some good tires is fabulous from a roll. ;)

Mine WAS FWD...Intent was not for 1/4, otherwise I'd've had power to all fours. :)

good tires? lol aka drag rads/slicks possibly! otherwise is smoke tire time. Ya ive heard pretty good things about moderately powered 3s awds at least from a buddy of mine tonys...hes got a GTO conversion (still lhd) and a $6k veilside body kit. Its fast. And he still says stick with a tt fwd setup. Its hard for me to argue...

The best thing to do when going sing on these IMO is to make custom exhaust manifolds going together into one T3/T4 flange or T4 flange beside the stock air box to better fit the turbo.
