It must be somewhere around there. JDMMA70 Is yours an ma70 or ma71 model? Im going to assume ma70 due to ur name :p Mine is an 88 "turbo A" model. I don't know what month though. Its model number says its an ma70 and it has the old style block and 6m crank although it also has the different ma71 body panels. Its head casting has an "A" instead of a number

ECU's changed at the same time as the crank, there was no weird crossover as far as I am aware.

Jeff

Do me a favor and look for different cam part numbers around the same time.

MA71 on the VIN
MA70 on the firewall

Turbo A's were made between Sept and October of 88.
Mine was made in June of 88. I have the newer style block, dunno what crank but most likely the 6M. The Turbo A should have the later style block with the 6M crank.

The blocks changed before the crank did.

All 7M-equipped Supras are MA70's, MA71 is not an official chassis code for ANY Supra.

In Japan, typically cars are given years based on production date, not "model year." Turbo A's were made at the same time as all other updated cars, they were not made earlier. Production started in 08/88 just like every other "89."

Cranks & ECU changed in 08/89 production for "1990" model year.

Hey IJ,

Do you have any photos of the front of the new "heavy" block?

Did the new block come with the small convex brass core plug installed (the one behind the aluminum inner front timing cover?)
Thanks

What about the GE block? I know the original GTE came from the GE block design for the 87, it is obvious. Did the GE get the updated block ever?

GE's were updated before the GTE's Nick.

That makes the Cressida more viable in the "maybe if I get around to it project" category. We have quite a few 89-92's in the US with 200k on the clock.

GE's and GTE's started production at the same time. Also like IJ said, they were updated as well to the newer design.

hey guys I purchased a 7mgte and from looking at this thread IJ made, it seems I have a late block (more ribs) but a 6m crank. This motor doesnt look like it's been pulled apart before...?
Confused :\

Same boat as me mate, my car is an 04/89 Aus-spec GTE with a late block & 6M crank... More of the weird '89 model obscurities I guess
