The only visual way to tell is if it's cracked.
And get ready for some labor on the rear one. The starter has to come off for sure. I took my upper intake manifold off to make it a little easier and it still took ~3 hours (be gentle with the cold start injector line if you do this, don't ask ).
As far as gas mileage. With the KS being the only thing wrong I was getting ~18 MPG to/from work. Once fixed I now get ~21 MPG and ~25 highway (minus 3 or 4 with the AC running).
