I've been diagnosed with a bad carrier bearing today. So now I'm trying to decide which route to go. I'm leaning toward the shaftmasters two piece but the price is hard to swallow. I want smooth smooth smooth. If I'm going to have to drop the whole shaft, I'd rather just bolt another right up instead of taking one apart.

I mentioned that im my first post on this thread. I also pointed out that I was told by someone I know who bought one recently that they have addressed the problem and it should now be a simple replacement, although I have not actually seen the new corrected part myself .

I just looked at your thread for altering the bearing to fit....good thinking!

I swear... people will spend $1K on wheels, and spend money everywhere else, but won't spend the money on the drivetrain...

No wonder there are so many threads about something breaking...

I don't think your going to find that the Toyota center support bearing does it's job any better or will be much/any more durable than the cheapy aftermarket unit. Frankly, this is a rare instance where I feel like an idiot for buying the Toyota part, especially given the price difference.

As far as one piece drive shafts go; I think Toyota knew what they were doing when they decided to use a 2 piece shaft. If you want a tougher set-up, go with a solid rear section (vs. stock 2 piece bonded unit) and heavier duty u-joints.

not me i wont spend money anywhere i dont have to...lol

What are the downsides of having a bad carrier bearing? I have looked at mine and i can push up on the driveshaft and it seems a little loose inside the bearing support, but i only notice vibrations right at about 80mph, above or below there is nothing, and thats a speed i hardly ever travel exactly at, so what is the NEED for replacement?

Has anyone ever filled the carrier bearing mount with that stuff they use to fill old rubber motor mounts? I remember reading somewhere of some stuff you can actually pour in and it hardens to create a solid mount. Since the bearing itself is fine on the drive shaft, why wouldn't this work? Would it transfer too much vibration to the cab or does the drive train need that little bit of flexibility in the carrier?

Does anyone have the dimensions for the carrier bearing. I found a carrier bearing for another vehicle while i was putting up truck at Advanced. It looks very similiar to the one on our cars and is only $17. I don't have access to any jacks at schools to check for myself.

Thanks,

Danny

Not bad, I thought about doing that but id rather just try and put the new guts into the old metal part. there isnt an Autozone up here and Napa + the local stores say theres no such thing as a replacement.

I believe they are around the $100 mark so with the lovely exchange rate

I inquired with the Aussie's, this is what I got back:
Thanks for your inquiry, We could supply you this item but it would probably work out quite expensive with shipping to the USA .

Then, I inquired with the guys at Powertrain and got this back:
I wrote...
I have a 1988 Toyota Supra and need the center support bearing replacement part. Can you please email me a quote for this part: 2380-15 shipped to Auburn AL? Also, I want to make sure that this is a direct replacement for the stock part, with no modifications required.

There response...
Part# 2380-15: $113.16 + $8.00 ground shipping. No modifications required.

Please call 1-800-798-4585 with any questions or to place an order. Note that a # 2380-150 is for the turbo model only.

:thumbup:I actually ended up ordering an aluminum drive shaft from Shaftmasters:icon_bigg. However, I think that for anyone interested in a center support bearing that isn't $200+, this may be a viable option. If anyone buys one, please post up and give some details about quality and fitment.
