Do you believe the Supra (MK3) will become a collectors car over time?

I attend the biggest Z car event in the world every April and I attend the biggest Supra event in the world every October. It is NO COMPARISON. The Z crowd BRINGS it. Less than 200 Supras show up for SILV and maybe 400-500 people. More than 500 cars are registered for the MSA event and that doesn't count the dozens more that just come and don't register and more than 4000 people attend. Granted The Z car crowd does not have the high dollar showboats, that show up like WOTM, Intense, Titan, Boost logic, and Sound Performance. But rest assured those type of people do exist they just don't truck their stuff to car shows, they race them.

The Supras are not as common as the Z cars. I would expect the z car event to be much larger. And I would expect any corvette/camaro/mustang event to be bigger than the z/supra events combined. Begs the question of why the high dollar showboats don't go to the Z events..The Supra crowd obviously spends more $$ on upgrades.

The supra is just not a track car. Sure, they can be modded, but with a lot of work. Its a heavy touring car at heart, not a low-slung wide-bodied race car designed for taking the curves. That's the reason you don't see them out on the track. I find it rather humorous that a "Supra" won Pinks. The only thing that car and mine have in common is the body shape and the material used to make the engine block. Well, we might have the same windshield wiper motor. I dunno...when does a Supra stop being a Supra? A true collector is going to want a stock car. And they are becoming rare.

And I am at a loss as to why you think the supra looks like a honda..The rare person who doesn't know what mine is will guess corvette.

I didnt say I thought it looked like a Honda, it was the guy lining my front tires up in the burnout box. I think they look great, others (nek muscle car guys) just dont pay that much attention to them, until they get schooled on the freeway by one.

Ok I guess I did say it, but I never would have thought that until the burnout box incident happened. LOL.

I hate that whenever some kid asks what kind of car I have and I say supra they're like OH COOL WHAT YEAR IS IT! Then I say 88 they're like oh..... :3d_frown: no respect.

I do get pulled off to the side often by middle aged dudes who actually know what kinda car I have, even in the piss poor state its in now :nono:

Its a car that not a whole lot know about but those who do usually love it.

I completely agree! People just dont care unless its a MKIV. They dont know the potential of a MKIII.

I blame the fast and the furious, I'd rather people not know of supra's all together than thinking mine sucks because it isnt the mkiv.

Like when I was car shopping back in the spring I asked my friend if I should go for a 5.0 mustang or an "older supra" and he was like dude you gotta go for the older supra. And when I rolled in to his place after I just bought my 88 metallic blue turbo targa supra (with the top off) hes like I thought you meant like the 98 off of the street racing games, he didn't even know they stopped making them :3d_frown: So now he calls it a rust bucket because he thinks its "too old" and he was surprised that it had power locks and windows :nono:

I respect every generation of supras...all 4 of them (mk1,mk2,mk3:love:,mk4)Most people don't know these cars. Even the 4th generation...They do know
some things about the mk4 cause of the F&F,Tuning magazines, video games
and all that.

Let me tell you a story:
I do have a mk3 (2jz/R154 bpu) as some of you might know with some body kit and interior modes. One of my best friends is Kostas (he is also Greek but lives in London),and he's got a mk4 (GT74 single turbo/motec 718 bhp) and
a body kit....let me show you the cars:

Kostas (RHD) mk4 (bomex front,Varis sides,Veilside spats,TRD wing,
Aero rear diffuser,Top secret carbon hood, lambo doors:sarcasm:,18's rims)

p1229987_3.gif

I like his mk4 a lot, specially in silver colour.I would only change the front
bumper to a 'DoLuck' one and some better wider 19' deep dish rims :biglaugh:

My mk3 supra (oem front bumper with jdm front lip,Bomex sides, regulus rear
under spoiler, carbon rear lights cover 'regulus look',aero rear diffuser)

p1229987_6.jpg

p1229987_7.jpg

p1229987_8.jpg

Anyway...Every time we go on a ride and we stop somewhere people come around and are looking like :aigo: that. Here these cars are very very
very rare! Ok..most of them would look the mk4 cause of the stupid F&F movie. Some of them would come and tell me that they never knew that
there is an older gen. than the JZA80 supra. They ask me which is faster,
and I tell them the mk4...and they go 'Wooooaauu ....ofcaurse it's the newer
edition'...'better engine' some others add. I say to them 'No...take a look' and
I open the hood. They go wild and say "amazing"..."fabulous".
After a boy comes and says.."I've driven this car (mk3) at the 1st Grand Tourismo video game" ! And after some minutes they started looking the mk3
with a lot of respect and admiretion.
Onether day we were washing our cars side by side and two small kids came
to us...as usuall. After a minute or two both kids came to me and told me if my car is a supra to? (didn't know it)..I said 'Yes'...And they respond "WOO,
nice cars, great cars...we can stay for hours watching them. But to tell you
the true,we like yours...the older model than the newer! I am like :aigo:
I never expected young kids (14-16 years old) to make such a comment, but
it happened!
And one more bad moment for the mk4...xaxa. I was in his car (Kostas mk4)
and we stopped at a gas station, and the guy there said to Kostas...'What
car is this? A Huyndai? :biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh:

I am adding some new stuff on my car at the moment...so I can go side by side with the mk4's glamour...:sarcasm:...and maybe go Single :biglaugh:
Anyway..both cars are great, and it is a matter of taste of what people
prefers. People who don't know other supras than the mk4 should learn, ask,
read before they do a statement on our cars.

Nice post SupraClaou! That's a pretty fine mkiii. Mine gets attention everywhere that I go.
I don't care if mine is original or not. Everything done to it is an upgrade from the factory specked car. I love my '91 1jz and I also love my dad's '89 with the 7m. I've had his up to 150mph on the Coquihalla Hwy in BC. I wonder what american 80s car would handle mountainous highways the way these Supras do. I've owned muscle cars too but prefer the refinement of this car, for now anyway. I'll keep working on this one to get it exactly the way I want it to be, in my collection.

In my opinion, I think the mkiii supra has the perfect blend of oldschool and new. When most have been crushed and people realize how unique these cars are, I would hope they would then be considered collectible.

Not many people knew about supras until "The Fast and the Furious" movie came around....then all of a sudden everyone wanted one.

I think the supra could become a colectors car in the next decades or so.

I think that's too bad the mkiii Supra, I personly think it's a great body style, I'm not saying that because I have one. But I think it could be a classic in it's own rights since it does have a different look which sets it apart from the rest of the Supras. Look at the Tiboron, it looks like the mk four. look at the Porches 911 they kept that body stlye for a LONG time. Look at the early Datsun "Z" car, they kept that body style for a long time.(as far as I'm concerned they look a like) If I would have kept my old American Hot rods, I could be living good right now. Look at the old classic cars at The Barret Jackson auctions, a "68" camaro went for a qaurter million dollors and it wasn't even matching numbers. Who would have known that my original Cuda would probaly get me upwards of fourty grand had I kept it. I think maybe the mk 3 features may come back but a different look. After all, look at the dash, isn't simalar to the Celica "77 to 79" years?
Fast and Furiuos Movie: funny what movies can do. What if the movie was written with a mkiii? People who say the mkiii isn't shit unless you have a mk four is stupid. Mk 4 and 3 are pretty much the same car, but only reskinned sheet metal. Little do "non Supra folks know, you can swap over a mk 4 drive train,"see".. now you have a mk 4 "Persay". "Oh' wel.
