To my knowledge my diff fluid has never been changed in my 4.30 LSD, and I think it is about time at 21 years and 91K miles. So, what do I need to use? I don't have the need to pay the dealership for this, as I have lift access and the ability to do it myself. Let me know guys, thanks.

I know search is friendly, but I didn't quite know how to word my question in search so that it didn't cut out everything or being too short or too common.

So you didn't even try...that's a pretty lame reason :3d_frown:

Last question, is their a drain plug, or am I going to have to pop the cover?

There's two plugs...a drain and fill. Suggest you remove the fill plug 1st.

I tried, but as I recall, I searched for "4.30 differential fluid", and it didn't come up with much. where is the fill located? On the rear or front of the pumpkin?

I know, it was a noob ass question, but I needed a quick answer, and I need to get all the fluid before Friday when I loose lift access for an unknown amount of time. Sorry guys, haven't had the luxury of the time or space to service my own diff until now.

I run the ford oil as it's pretty cheap and I didn't want to make the diff noisy...

Also, you don't need a lift to do it...

Ok guys since you have helped me out in the past I will bite the bullet and spoon feed the noob. So from one noob to another here we go.

Parts needed.
  • 2 quarts of Ford non-synthetic sae 80w-90 premium Axle Lubricant. Its a red bottle. Don't buy the synthetic.
  • 1 bottle of ford friction modifier. (XL-3) The back of the ford axle lube bottle tells you to add friction modifier for lsd systems.
  • A 24mm or 15/16 six point socket.
  • A small hand pump with the long hose. They sell them at Walmart or the auto parts just for pumping gear oil and such out of containers when gravity is not your friend.
  • 1 clothesline clip
  • oil change pan.
  • Rags

Place your oil change pan underneath the car. Take the clothesline pin and put it on your nose. Use your 24mm or 15\16 socket and pray you can loosen the top bolt. If you can loosen the top try and loosen the bottom. Take note of which bolt goes where. I think one has a magnet on it to attract metal debris. Cant remember honestly. If one of the bolts doesn't come loose stop right there and forget about it. Slide your oil change pan under the rear axle and remove both bolts and drain away. While the fluid is draining add the bottle of friction modifier to one of the gear oil containers. I would shake it up a little. You wouldn't want the modifier sitting at the top of the lube and not getting pumped in. Put your pump together. Replace bottom bolt. Use the first quart bottle you added the modifier to and pump your fluid into the top hole of the lsd. You will use approx 1.5 quarts of fluid or one and a half bottles of gear oil. When the fluid spills out over the top, replace top Bolt. Can't tell you what the the torque is. Check oil pan container for metal shavings.
Thats it.
