This is for a 1JZ.

I took the car off the road in december to do a lot of things to it.

Ended up changing my valve stem seals, Crower springs/retainers, Crower 272 small core cams, RPS Twin Carbon clutch and aluminum flywheel and other non engine related things.

Today I put everything together, shimmed the cams, set timing right and decided to fire it up without any accesories and no cooling system.

It eventually fired after cranking for a while, but wouldn't stay running without throttle, then eventually died and there was a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust manifold and turbo, got so hot I burned my fingers touching the downpipe and it only ran for maybe 20-30 secs.

Car also has a 61mm single.

check your timing make sure its not 180 degrees off, also did you mess with the TPS? also there is a little sensor on the coolent elbow ( EFI) sensor make sure its hooked up.

there's no 180* off, it's a 2:1 ratio of crank to cam turning. the crank will always be at top dead center if the crank pulley lines up with the mark. i've changed timing belts/idlers/sprockets enough times and never had this mythical "180* off". if you set it at 0*, it's good.

i agree as above, your problems sounds like timing. check the cams. also check if you're throwing a code 13, i was when my cam sprocket was off a tooth. maybe cam sensors are bad, but i doubt it.

The 1JZ CAN NOT be 180* off. That's only possible with a mechanically adjustable timing device. The 1JZ uses two cam sensors cast into the camshaft itself. It's physically impossible for them to activate on the wrong cycle.

It still sounds like you may be off a tooth with your timing though.

I just realised my problem. I set the cam pulleys the right way, but didn't set the crank pulley right. I didn't put it to "0" on the timing cover, but aligned it straight up like the cam gears.

Set the timing the right way and now there's a knock??

With the Crank 180 off the car will not start. Meaning, the cams are dead on the marks and the crank is 180 off the mark.

YOU CAN'T DO THAT ON A 1JZ. Ignition is 100% computer controlled. There's no way you can fire on the wrong stroke. Go ahead, turn your crank 180*, it'll still work.

I found out what the knock was. The clutch was actually hitting one of the inspection plates on the tranny, so I bent it enough for the clutch not to hit it.

Man now the car runs so rich. Once I start it, it stays at 14.7 for a little while and then goes down to 12:1.

It was the passenger side inspection plate.

do you have a picture? ive never heard of them hitting the plates and i would think to bend the plate would to render it useless anyway as it wont keep anything from getting in there.
