Well i skimmed it and maybe it's true maybe not, i have not had a problem with disks that are years old. Also if you get some higher quality Disks the Layer you write on is not the layer that the reflective surface is on.

kind of like this

--------------
Writing layer
--------------
Plastic layer
--------------
reflective layer
-------------
Plastic layer
--------------
readable surface of the Disk

also take into account how long you will have the disks for and how long it takes the stuff to leach through if it truly does. Ten to one you have already destroyed or thrown away the disk anyways

Ninja Edit

Cheaper Disks are like this or Better put Lower Quality Disks. Because you can spend higher amounts of cash and still get low quality Disks. This is where brand names and what type of disk you are buying matters.

--------------
Writing Surface and Reflective layer
----------------
Plastic Layer
----------------
readable surface of the Disk

Some disks are made to be written on and have a printable surface made to take inks. Generally these are the White Ink jet printable disks.

verbatim is a good brand but they do have a line of cheap disks as well
Allot of cheap disks the Surface ends up flaking off anyways after a few years

I have some nice Memorex Disks Right now.
I have used Fujifilm in the past as well with basically the same setup as above

I have heard that Imation has nice disks but i do not know as i have not tried them and same goes for the Sony Disks

as far as cheap disks i have come accross
Maxell
Princo
and basically i have not come across a good quality no name brand yet

The article does not use any credible evidence to back up the stated claims. Disk writer pens were originally created because most markers don't write well on the top surface, not to protect data.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what/why are we looking at these pictures?

Has the maker affected the data surface?

Or are you just illustrating the different disc layers?

that second pic... its kinda hard to tell which layer is which. did you basically show that there isnt much chance the ink could leech that far? to the data layer? i'm not too familiar with how the layers are configured and whats vital.

thank though. did you just break that disk and take those pics? lol..

but anyway,
right now i've been using Maxell, Sony, and Memorex.

any objections to the quality of those?

i'm not too worried...at least about my disks. i'm hoping to have an ipod for my somewhat limited collection, but we just started backing up VHS movies onto DVD and labeled them all with permanent.

hmm. so i guess i'll have to look around more.

i would stay away from the Maxell's

the picture way to show you the two different plastic layers with the metalic surface that the laser writes to and reads from is sandwiched in between. Meaning the marker will never penetrate to that level through the polycarbonate.

ok. thanks.

now the only thing i'd be partially worried about is the tons of valuable disks meant for long-term storage of our media... i might have to copy those to new DVD's.

but maybe the DVD's will die before the pen markings hurt them anyway.

personally i dont yet understand how a plastic DVD or a CD can self-destruct over time if you keep it out of the sun and away from harsh conditions...its plastic.

but maybe the data layer just randomizes on its own? i dunno.

These people seem to be trying to undermine the sanctity of SHARPIE(copyright). We at the SHARPIE Coporation feel this is an unprovoked attack on our good name, high standard of marker design and construction, and on the artistic freedom of cd labeling. Rest assured these accusations are false and a special team from SHARPIE HQ have been dispatched to handle these nair-do-wells.

Thanks You,
Some Guy At Sharpie
(Possibly a CEO)

Its bullshit your reading, just like that CDs that are burned only last like 10 years. As long as any media is kept correctly stored it will last as long as you want it too. The cover that is printed on a CDR or DVD is designed to be written on. Why do you think they have lines for writting on them.
