hey guys i am currently getting the block ready to be decked but i dont have the tools to get the crank pully off so i cant go any further, i was told it has to be a bare block to machine it but i dont see why it cant be done with pistons etc in there? can it be done without fully stripping it or does it leave shavings in the bore?
is there an easy way to get the crank pully off without special tools?
if it cant be done without stripping it, would it cost me an arm and a leg for someone to take it apart and put it back together?
just stuck atm and would love the car going asap as its been off the road for 2 months now
cheers

Your going to have to disemble it. Any machinest who would agree to do it like that is retarded! Most auto parts stores rent tools for cheap.

just take it all apart if your getting it decked.... If youve never taking it apart, i would cause its a fun learning experience... :D but ya i deff wouldnt get it decked with out it being disassembled.

Just use an impact to get the crank pulley off. I had to heat mine till it was red hot though cause they can get pretty stuck in there... lol

If you don't have the tools and you don't feel like renting them, I'm sure your machine shop won't mind you paying them to do it. Just a thought.

shouldn't be too hard to disassemble it if its already out of the car. you just have to have the right tools & torque specs. rent tools from Oreilly's they'll give you your cash back after you return the tools. & as for the crank pulley, get a powerful pneumatic gun & impact sockets (should be a 19MM socket for crank pulley bolt) & id go ahead & buy a compressor. those tools are essential if your going to be working on vehicles. our pneumatic gun does 900-1000lbs of torque. EXPENSIVE? yes. does it pay off? Hell yes. They are Tools YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY have stored, & ready for use.

tools you will need to reassemble. "Piston ring compressor, torque wrench, sockets, torque specs, engine lube, rachet, engine oil"

if you need torque specs i can give them to ya just pm

Just rent a puller and use 2 screw drivers one on each side and gently wiggle it off. All of mine just end up slidding off.

Needs to be taken apart so it can be cleaned good. You could get metal particles all of and screw yourself keepiing it together. That and there prolly isnt a machine shop out there that would machine it together.

wow thanks everyone for the replys, i might ask the machinest shop how much it will be for them to take apart the block and re assemble first, i have it down to basically just the block with bottom timing belt cover, crank pully etc on it, but i have been using the tsrm and it has a special tool that holds the crank still while you undo it, i dont have this, but i do have a compresser and rattle gun etc just not sure how to hold it still, as i have very little mechanical knowledge apart from taking the 7m out and apart, would be best to get the machine shop to do it but if they say a rediculas amount might have to do it myself.

Yeaa.. last time we took a disassembled Toyota pickup engine to a Machine shop they offered to build back the engine & we asked the price & i don't remember but we laughed our asses off & just took it home & build it back in a couple hours. But let us know the price. We'll tell you if its reasonable or not. & well i highly recommend getting a more powerful pneumatic gun. ours is a Matco with about 900-1000ft/lbs of torque. YOU WON'T NEED anything to hold down the crank with that. :naughty: & well ABSOLUTELY Label the bolts label label label! if you take them off yourself of course. put em in a bag, take pictures from where they come & stick it in the back & well draw arrows on the pictures. In the end youll have many bags & pictures & i know Its time consuming but its worth it

Hope you didn't reuse it........
Since the pulley are 2 piece bonded together with rubber.
I am sure the rubber didn't like the red-hot iron.

Ya not something you really want to heat when a simple puller will take it off or even just wiggling it off. Clean it off good and it will slide right back on.

Some people should NOT be giving Tech advice...... :nono:

OP: If you have the pan off a block of wood between the Crank/Block will hold it then a breaker bar to undo the Big Bolt (It "should" be done up to 195 ft/lbs so expect a struggle)

Careful prying with 2 screwdrivers/crowbars usually pops the damper off, be careful NOT to lever on the outer ring as it's easily damaged and most have the bonding failing so it's a good time to replace it once off.

I was struggling with the crank pulley myself. I used an impact to get the bolt off, took a couple of tries but it came off. After the bolt came off, I just rotated the pulley while hitting it with a rubber mallet.

If you dont feel comfortable doing it yourself i would drive to a shop or dealership in town. Pretty sure someone wouldent mind helping you out. Should only take them a second or so to remove it with an impact
.Tips are great motivators too :)

cool cheers guys, machine shop ended up taking it apart, measured everything up and everything was fine, faced the block, polished crank etc. for $200 then getting new rings and bearings etc for $200, but they said around $250 to put it back together so im gonna have a good crack myself and see how i go.

as to labelling, i only did a few things and now thinking about it i am going to regret not labelling everything lol

who here has actually rebuilt there motor? did you just use the tsrm? also did you used the specs from there apart from the head or are there all new specs,
cheers kale

I've built a couple ;)

Tq specs depend on fasteners used if stock use the TRSM if ARP use theirs.
