Cup holder mod

What kind of mods has everybody used due to the lack of useable cup holders in the mkiii?

There's a local guy here that works in a plastics shop. He's made some that replace that compartment in the console. Very handy.

My '89 had the ones in the compartment,but since I keep stuff in there, they're not useable.

i use the little flip compartment thats behind the shifter and tems controler

That works sometimes.

I tend to not buy drinks without caps. Usually don't bring drinks at all in my car.

I used to use the coin compartment as well in my old one, my new one seems a little shallower though :/
So nobody has any crazy mods that they fabbed in their cars...? Guess most do the same thing and use capped drinks lol

Just get a center console out of an 89+ and it should work I think (correct if I'm wrong here people).

It's a 91 so I have the factory one but it is kinda useless

Is there a difference between the two? Cuz my 87 console seemed like it was twice as deep from what I remember

The only thing that I find them useless for are large drinks.. which I rarely get..

Pre '89 didn't have them.

'89 they put them in the center console.

When the A70 got airbags, the controller for the airbags went under the center console, so it got shallower.

this gave me an idea, what if i took all the airbag crap out from under the console, installed the deeper coin bucket and then take some really firm foam and cut a block that fits inside and has a round hole in the center it for a cup. then i can just close it when im not using it....? thoughts?
