CT26 turbo sounds almost like a compressor?! High pitch air flow sound when boosting!

Did you make sure to prime the turbo properly prior to firing up the engine? If it was ran dry, even for a little bit, it can damage the bearing and cause shaftplay. Enough shaft play can cause the wheel to come in contact with the housing; which can lead to bent fins.

Not saying that's what happened. Just throwing that out there. Though your fins appear to have come in contact with some sort of projectile.

how do u prime the turbo exactly??

I don't think the damage seen here was caused by shaft play due to the damaged portions being so far inwards from the fin tips. Unless of course a broken off tip then caused this damage after colliding and breaking off and then re-colliding with the other fins. Also the housing appears relatively unmarked for that amount of damage. I circled the chips I am referring to in red from the original image.

Classic case of "FOD" note there's no marks on the inside of the compressor housing to indicate the wheel has ever touched it...

Pull the EFI fuse and crank the engine over until you build up oil pressure. Then put the fuse back and fire the engine up. If you really want to be anal; you can hold the impeller wheel for the first minute or so to make sure the bearing is properly lubricated. Personally, I don't like the idea of putting my fingers anywhere near the wheel when the engine's running, so I use a long extension and socket placed around the impeller axle's nut to keep the wheel stationary for the first few minutes. Most will tell you that this is not necessary, but I have a pretty expensive turbo; so......

I've looked everywhere on the AFM housing, the air filter, accordion hose.. everything looks ok. The AFM housing has this mesh guard, so can't have come anything from the filter(?). The AFM housing it self looks perfectly normal, as well as the accordion hose. Does it have to have been something that has been sucked into the compressor wheel? I've also meassured shaft play now, it's about 2-3mm movement side to side.

Just to make this very clear, that is NOT a 'mesh guard'. The honey comb design allows the karman vortex meter to work and read properly! I won't go into detail, just know, do not mess with it.

IJ, Excuse my ignorance, what is Turbo FOD? (my guess is turbo fodder?)

looks exactly like what happened to my ct26, id go looking for missing fragments of compressor wheel.

FYI - The noise is known as Death whine.

Here is what happened to mine

Crap photo but you can see many scratches here

Thanks for posting pictures paradox616!

But say I get another CT26.. Will it be fine then, or can the same thing happen? Don't want to ruin another turbo..
I'm always running stock acc. hose and apexi filter, and 2.5" aftermarket intercooler pipes.. everything is put on properly etc..

So how something has managed to get into the system is a big mystery for me..

i think you mis-understood me, your turbo is now unbalanced.. replace it before you drive the car again. go looking for shards of metal that may be lurking in your intercooler piping just waiting to wreck your motor / exhaust wheel... oil that pooled in the intercooler side tank caught mine and i was able to find all missing pieces...

IJ. cool., i found quite a few scratch marks on my housing and one of the fins bent back and a stupid amount of shaft play, compressor wheel looks as fubared as his.

What did I misunderstand? I know it needs to be replaced.. and I'm going to check the intercooler ;) But how can know it won't happen again? Guess it maybe depends what I can find in the intercooler, but say it's just the compressor wheel that lost a small bit which affected a lot more.. was that just unlucky, or will it happen again with another turbo?

ahh i get you now, can you remove the compressor housing of the ct26 when you get it off (just a circle clip) im intrested to know if yours looks the same as mine..

only suggestion i have is look to make sure the airfilter is %100 intact / and there are no contaminants on the inside of the filter from before it was installed.
