hey guys, been a while since ive been on here, got a mystery on my hands, i have almost finished my ma-70 turbo restore, and now...im noticing after i drive home from work, (if i uncover the baby to drive it) when im letting it idle down, i hear a rattling noise,

now, i was told at one point it may be the "waste gate" actuater, well, i checked that, nothing bad or loose, recently i had that side of the motor undone to clean and polish for a show, and i noticed something....i could grab the intake side of the turbo...and WIGGLE IT!!!! nothing major, but the compressor housing was moving sepratly from the exhaust housing!

so again i was told to look at the turbo, and see if there was a clamp between the 2 housings, i cant see anything i would consider a "clamp" there are no oil or water leaks, no boost leaks that i am aware of, what can i do to diagnose this problem b4 i have a turbine shot through my hood and into orbit....

thanks :1zhelp:

I would take off the accordion hose and inspect it. Either you left something in there or you have some seriouc shaft play and the turbine is hitting your housing. Eitherway take off the accordion hose and inspect it. Also are the blades chipped?

Hold on, your compressor housing was moving seperately from your exhaust housing? DO you have any pics?

i have no pics, and note that the movement was very minor, but, it was visual, and you could feel it...picture.....two pieces of tubing, slid together, fit tight, but have very minor movement when you move them back and forth against one another,

and as far as shaft play, there is none, only have maybe 15k miles on it in the last 5 years ive been doing this, and chips....i dont really see any..........

There is a big C Clamp holding the intake side turbo housing to the center housing. The only thing I can think of is that the big O-ring is missing. This O-ring goes in betweend the C clamp an the housing. Where did you get the rebuild at?

i got it already re-built from turbo-power in cameron park calif. anyone have a pick of a "normal" turbo, with this elusive clamp?

The compressor and turbine mating surfaces are flat, with one piloted in the other (forget which is piloted in which). But... The backsides of each circular mating surface have a taper. A so-called V-band clamp with a matching female taper holds the two pieces together, Once you find it, it is as obvious as the nose on your face. The V-band is made in two halves, bolted together. Sounds as if the bolting is loose. The bolts may be frozen. When you get them loose and/or replaced, don't go nuts with torque. Maybe 15 lb-ft is plenty, maybe a bit more.

ok, i went out last night, looked very close at the turbo, borderline had it off, i see no clamp, but i do see where the two housings are flush up against one another, i climbed up in my attick, dug out my spare ct-26, friggin hot in there for an hour, lol, aaaaand of course...theres the clamp

so...since the turbo on my car has NO CLAMP!!! :3d_frown: what is this going to cause, boost leaks? could it maybe contributing to my coolant being pushed out of my overflow tank? i have put in the fluidyne rad with the dual fans, and after driving on the freeway, or under alot of boosting, i notice it has overfilled the overflow, and no the heads not cracked, and no the gasket is not blown, had all that checked. it is not getting hot ither, i could drive this thing to timbuck too,

idk, getting annoying, any ideas?

Yes this can cause a pretty big boost leak. If you dont have that big C clamp you will probably be missing the Big O-Ring also (Obviously, just making sure). Since you were missing the big C-clamp on the turbo intake side, hopefully your housing wasnt hitting your turnine. Which it probably was since you were hearing those rattling noises. Hopefully no serious damage was cause. I would stop driving the car untill I fixed this problem, might save your turbo. ;)

And about the coolant pushing out of you overflow tank. I had this problem, and I started out with the simple. Having any coolant leaks in your Cooling system will cause the overlow tank to push out the coolant out of it. Also when I had this problem is ended up bing my radiator cap. I replaced it and bam....the problem went away. :naughty:

im back to the ratling noise here, i have another thread going about my overheating, i think it is related to this problem as well.......i have changed and routed correctly all my heater hoses and elbow hoses, my question is this....

after the car gets warm, my turbo does the ratling noise, i can push on the front of it, with it running, and the noise will go away.....what could this be? and also...could boost OR exhause be introduced to the coolant through the turbo? i have heard rumors about this being possible? any input would be awsome...im about to toss the car.....15k later, tons of new toyota parts, and now this! im done if i cant fix it quick :3d_frown:

i figured i should go through and update all my open end threads.

my turbo rattling was inface due to some schmuck taking off the clamp on the turbo. my over heating issue i discovered was due to my mls hg being blown cause the same schmuck did not mill the head. any other questions im forgetting to answer just ask. :)

whoa whoa.... theres an oring between the 2 housings???? lol wow.... i bought my car 11 months ago and the PO had been driving it without the clamp... so i ordered one from someone on supraforums when i bought the car 11 months ago and there was no oring? lol whats the effects of not having an oring between the 2 housings? it dont leak any oil and ive put more than 15k miles on it and it pulls hard....

I think people are getting confused, the o ring is between the compressor outer housing and compressor inner housing. It goes under the c clip that holds the compressor housing cover on (the aluminum part you see), but you cannot see the o-ring unless you take the compressor side apart.

There is a clamp that holds the two halves together shown here, its next to the exhaust housing side touching it basically. IIRC there is no o ring between these two sides, its just a machined lip held by the band. The OP said he is missing the clamp/v-band so the entire compressor side is loose from the exhaust side.

when i bought my car it was like this. i could see directly into my turbo. idk how long the PO drove it like that but i put a clamp on it and ive been driving it bout 15k miles
