Okay, I'm in need of some advice as to what can be done as I'm not all that knowledgeable in the finer details of repair work.

Heading home from work a couple days back I started hearing (and feeling through the clutch pedal) and very loud rattling noise. Pulled over to investigate and I found the crank pulley bolt was ready to fall out and the pulley itself was wobbling quite alot. I didn't have all my tools with me so I tightened it down as best I could and got home. I pulled got the timing covers off today and had a look;

The pulley was scraping against the timing cover enough to wear away a lto of material from it. The timing belt was decently chewed up in front, no doubt due to that bent up washer that was underneath the cover. The keyway on the crank looks to me in pretty bad shape. The timing pulley has a bit of slack when I try and rotate it. As well it gets stuck trying to pull it off, but I haven't tried a puller on it just yet. My question would be; is there any way this can be repaired, or do I need a new crankshaft and pulley? I live at an apartment so I really can't do anything requiring a cherry picker lest management gripe at me.

And, it's an 88 sport package n/a. :) Thanks!

In your last pic., it looks like the woodruf key is upside down on the crank. The rounded side goes down, the flat side goes up. The bent washer you were holding is supposed to be pressed on to the crank pulley for the t.b.; you can get a new timing belt crank pulley at Toyota, not real expensive, iirc. All that oil inside the timing covers is a major problem. You need to replace both cam seals, the crank seal, and the oil pump seal. Clean everything up, and put a new timing belt on it. Torque the tensioner bolt to 36 ft. lbs.(NO MORE!!).
Here's a link to how its done: http://cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK3/manual.aspx?Section=EM&Page=22
Just follow the steps, and you'll be awright.

Is it? I can try getting it out and looking further. What concerns me is the keyway on the crank is rounded on the trailing side where the force would get applied. It looks like it goes almost to the bottom of the keyway so I'm concerned as to whether or not just putting a new woodruff key in would hold.

And yes, new seals are definitely in order, as well as a timing belt since that was eaten up in the process.

It's hard to tell in the pics if its rounded, just looks like its full of gunk. If your concerned about it, you can get new dampener pullies from some of the sponsor vendors. Can you clean the crud outta the keyway and take a closer pic.?

Edit: Sorry, thought you were talking about the pulley. You'd be surprised how deep that key way is in the center. I wouldn't chance it, though.

You're screwed. There are 3 options, none of which are pretty.

1. New crank
2. Have the keyway welded in and recut
3. Have a new keyway cut on the other side of the crank.

I've yet to find a machine shop that is capable and willing to do #2 or 3 while the engine is still in the car.

No matter what, you're likely going to need a new front harmonic dampener. If you can find a used one, great, otherwise I'd suggest buying the ATI unit, it's cheaper (and better, IMO) than a stock one from Toyota.

I come from a land down under
I'd get an accurate measurement off the Crank Snout before spending a Cent on trying to repair the Keyway as the waer a bit while the pully is wobbling around and will lose the press fit required to make it spin true/lock it to the snout.

End result of this is 6 months down the track it'll do the same shit again.

I had a feeling it was going to come to that. Though, had to ask just the same. I'll see about sourcing a good crank and finding someone with a garage and a hoist. This is my daily driver so I need to figure out something quick. Thanks for confirming my suspicions though. :)

If I had the money I'd just get the engine replaced...after 208,000 miles it's in need of a rebuild anyway.

Hi there

The "bent washer" in his hand is pressed on the balancer for the timming belt.
How does that help the timming belt?? when the timming belt is in the in side of the cover and the pully is in the out. I'm not challanging you, I'm real curious about it. I have the same problem where my belt is getting chewed up like his
Thanks

Is tha washer behind the back side of the cover??? you said underneath the cover,..did you mean the back side, between the balancer and the cover???

The washer is (supposed to be) pressed on to the front of the pulley for the timing belt (inside the cover). It keeps the belt from walking forward on the crank. All motors with timing belts have them, just most aren't pressed on to the timing belt pulley; they're pinned between the timing belt pulley and the dampener.

Can someone NAIL this thing down. I just did my belt and I had nothing inside my 91 that came apart or moved, other than what looked like it was supposed to be there. I guess I'll take mine off and look again. My tsrm never mentioned this thing either.

This entire thread with the exception of cuels posts.., is just plain confusing.

Thank You. I never removed my timing belt pulley. This seal for that pulley. Is it underneath the pulley? It nearly has to be as I have never seen it. If it's on top I definitley need to look into it. Because I know I didn't replace it.

Thanks Again.

lol, not talking about the front main seal. On the front of the TIMING BELT pulley on the crank, there is a steel washer that is PRESSED on. It's missing in the 5th picture. If you look at the t.b. pulley on the crank, the teeth stop, and there's a little lip. The lip is where the steel washer goes. It shouldn't be loose; it should look like part of the Timing Belt pulley. I really can't explain this any better, so I'll try to get a pic of one tomarrow.

Let me get this straight, the timming gear pulley, it has two lips, one in the back, one in the front, right? Are you say there is one more washer between the balancer pulley and the gear pulley, now that I look closer at the last picture it is missing the smaller lip
lets get some pictures together of all the componets and let's talk work this one out, my car is taken apart I'll get picture to,let's get pictures of the whole assembly from balancer to geared pulley
