Are you supposed to be able to move the flange up and down?

If the flange nut was loose would oil leak out of the center of the flange?

How often do pinion bearings go bad in these diffs?

I got under my car today to do some peakin around (cool weather means its nice to be outside) if i grab the driveshaft where it bolts to the diff flange and push up i can move it up and down prolly 1-2mm (not exact measurement but you can tell its moving)

And if i rememeber correctly to pull the pumpkin out of our cars you have to drop the subframe right?

I assume the flange you are talking about is the pinion yoke, and no its not supposed to have play in it. it should spin freely but not have freeplay. That would also cause the leak you are describing also.
They diff is really easy to remove, just comes right down. It is really heavy though.
I believe that your bearing is either excessively worn or if your pinion nut is loose the pinion may have worked its way loose causing slop. If you dont know much about differentials I would not recommend tightening the nut because you could bind up the pinion and have even more problems. Good luck!

i know some about the diffs and how they work and preload and such but i wasnt completely sure about the movement so i figured id ask.

At this point i dont really know what to do about it. The pinion when spinning it doesnt have alot of slop its tight but i can move it up and down and i can feel space when i move it like itll come off of one thing and bump into another if you get what i mean. its really subtle tho and hard to tell if you dont pay attention.

Thanks for your help tho i guess ill call my mechanic friend and see what he says about labor.

There is a seal behind that. Also oil can leak From here if that seal has worn a grove into it. There shouldn't be any play, That is torqued down to about 146, around that spec.

the seals not leaking outside its comin out between the flange and the nut and leaking between the driveshaft flange and the diff flange and then slinging it all over the place from there its not a hardcore leak its very small and it could be from that nut being loose.

im 95% sure the nut is loose i got under the car with my aunts boyfriend and when you move the flange you can see its cock eyed from what it should be. if you get what i mean.

anybody know who makes a bearing kit for this diff? i tryed looking on marlin crawler but i had no luck.

I wouldn't pay a mechanic to remove the diff!!! It's stupid easy to remove...you don't even have remove the driveshafts from the car...just unbolt them from the diff and pull the cup back off the studs.

It's actually kinda fun...and a one arm retarded monkey could do it.

I dont wanna swap because my LSD still feels to be in great shape from what i can feel having somebody hold the oppisite tire and trying to spin mine. I didnt know about the crush sleeve problem completely until today, I knew it was a problem but i didnt know the extent of it. If i had the money id pick up a used 4.3 pumpkin and have it completely rebuilt clutches and all i just swap it in my driveway, But as it is im gonna be cutting it close. Good thing its winter and it hardly rains ever in florida tail light seals are gonna have to be pushed back a little bit.

Id rebuild it myself if i had the tools but he cuts us great deals to do stuff and if i can help a friend and his business out im all for it. I know he wont mess it up either. Ive watched him do the rear end in that blue dakota in my sig and a couple other cars, Hes really meticulous about his work.

On a side note my center bearing in my driveshaft is for sure shot! It has about 1 inch of play up and down. Good thing i already had that planned out to be fixed and knew about it or i mighta been shocked!

LOL, yeah, keep in mind it's NOT cheap, personally I would buy a low milage spare, rebuild it and be done.

Rebuilding one that's already blown gets expensive (gears, clutches, bearings, seals) and break-in of the gears has to be done correctly...

Thats what i was thinkin about. I dunno what ill do ive still yet to call my friend and ask him how much itd be, Prolly in the neighborhood of 150-200 judging from the price of the dakota rear end (swapped the whole lsd out for a detriot true-trac,4.56's,new bearings, new seals everything new.) and i think it was somewhere in the ballpark of 250 for him to do that. I havnt quiet figured out a game plan yet tho.

Like so many other things these days the problem is money. Ill just have to be overly depressed for a couple months! :p

Thanks for your help.
