also at what temp do you guys think the fans should switch to the high setting? 180 degrees? 190 degrees?

on summit i see a 185on/170off and a 200on/180off. it sounds like i'd want the 185on but im not sure if the engine should be a certain temp to perform the best

^its interesting, but it seems like complete overkill since i already have the greddy gauges installed in my cluster. it would be redundant to have that plus the gauge and a hell of alot more money lol.

Trust me- If you get the temp switch(as I did) from Summit, get the higher temp unit. otherwise, your fans will run continuously from 5 minutes after you start the car, till 45 minutes after you shut if off, and your battery WILL die. The problem is- the fan switch should not be located at the water elbow. It's right next to the hot engine, and doesn't know when the coolant in the radiator is under temp. So, you end up with really cold coolant in the rad, and hot coolant in the engine after shutdown, but the fans continue to run. If you look at most cars with E-fans stock, the temp sensor is threaded right into the side of the radiator.

or you wire it so its based off of ignition so the fans wont run unless the car is in the on position....

to wire a relay like that is super simple, its just like the 12v mod for the fuel pump. lol

my e-fans did GREAT during daily driving, but my fan couldnt cool my NON TURBO fast enough on the smog dyno... so i said fuck this, and went and threw on my turbo clutch and turbo fan... ZERO issues after that... (and no shroud)

People say no to e-fans because toyota did their homework, and they made a DAMN good cooling system if its maintained, and setup properly... once you start having e-fans and controllers and what not, shit gets complicated, and it just doesnt cool that well.

and i would like to think that e-fans are a ton cheaper then clutch fans, but, if e-fans were really that good, they would be standard in the automotive world. but there not.

For the most part, I'm with the guys raining on e-fans, which is why there is still a clutch fan in my car.

However... coupled with an electric water pump, you could set up a system that cools the engine down after racing... I'm surprised more people haven't put this together yet. Leads me to believe there aren't that many people actually racing their Mk3s.

for me to race an mk3 would require too much money to make it 'track worthy' in my mind... i could spend a lot less, swap the 7m into a datsun 240z, and it would be a lot faster. but some people just love the mk3....

and couldnt you run an inline electric water pump with the stock one to aid in cooling when the car is off?

where do you get one of those IJ? does that completely replace the stock water pump or can u run one in parallel?

also for those of you with electric fans where did you stick your temp sensor.

I come from a land down under
Davies Craig EWP 110

I run mine in series as either pump can flow through the other, you can run them as the only pump and they have a PWM controller (I use the MoTeC to control mine)

im gonna look into that pump.

on a side note does anyone else have any comments on what temp i should set the fans on high too? the temperature switches only come in that 200f on and 185 on. btw the sensor will be installed in the waterneck before the thermostat (where the stock a/c and aux fan thermo sensors are mounted) i assume this is a good place to have my temperature sender for my temp gauge right?

it seems like my thread died but hopefully someone will chime in. my car is an 88 and i have that single fan which i beleive is connected to the a/c system. now is that fan triggered upon temperature or upon pressure in the a/c system. meaning if i leave that fan connected when i go electric and put my electric fans on their own thermostat system everything would work correct? or should i tie in that a/c fan to my new fan electric fan system.

get a better rad. koyo or fluidyne... i would be worried about mushi's quality...
and you could try a colder thermostat, that way it opens sooner and longer, because your gonna be at operating temps no problem if your in boost a lot like you are.

Wouldn't you want the thermostat to open at Toyota specified time? I am not meaning to be correcting anyone I just thought if you lower it you would run richer and not as good? i may be wrong and sorry again for just barging in here.

i told him that because he races his car and its a little warm for him... and i doubt your car is gonna be 'cold' while racing.... haha

Very true. I guess no matter what it won't really stay at a constant, considering that racing involves high rpms and quick deceleration, and that over and over again, I guess if he did open it just a little sooner he would make up for time and i imagine it would possibly be good for him, at least for the racing part of it all.

In a race car I can't see it making jack difference, car "Should" be at operating temp before it's making power and once it is it's NOT closing again.

Can't remember ever seeing a pace car in street registered class sprints ;)

btw guys i ended up going with a OE 195f stant superstat for a thermostat, i saw IJ recommended it lol. i have the rad installed, so far so good i only had it idling since i dont have the fans hooked up yet. i also installed my aftermarket temp gauge and my 130amp alternator to handle the e-fans. :biglaugh: tomorrow i will tackle the fan controller project. i'm going to try to hit up the junkyard and find a small fuse box so that it looks oem. i noticed some mitsubishi's have a/c fan relay and fuse box that is tiny so ill scout one of those out.
