If your cooling system is marginal no amount of fans electric or engine are going to make a difference.

A lot of race cars run without a fan at all as their cooling system is carefully matched to the output of the engine, fans are usually for very low speed minimal airflow situations.

Like IJ said fans are for cooling when your in traffic, when your going along the highway or race track at speed the fan is just free wheeling. Get a vented hood a bigger rad and wrap your turbo/exhaust to try and keep engine bay temps down.

Sound should be opposite and get louder when hot. The replacement fanclutch from autozone is an N/A one that they sell as both, I don't run one because of that and went when one from a dealer...

yes as already stated, run an override switch to your aux fans and run those when you want to cool off after your track session.

The ford duel fan set-up you refer to is commonly found on the v6 contour and I hear lots of mk2 guys run those. If I were going to run an electric fan I would install an audible warning system to tell me if the system failed.

i think i'm going with electric. i'm gonna run dual fans, not sure what kind yet, but they will be setup as two different systems. so if one fails the other will still be there. I also have an aftermarket temp gauge to keep an eye on everything. i will update you guys once i get the rad in and i choose what fan setup i want to go with.

yea i dunno lol.. it seems to be cooling way better than my stock turbo clutch tho. i will be going electric fan route so i guess i wont have to bother with it anymore

make sure you have one thats turned on automatically after a set temp, because you are human, and sometimes people forget to flip the switch.
stock is a better choice in the long run, and its a lot quieter... but if you feel the need to spend the extra money then go for it, but you were warned that the stock IS better and more effective.

Stock is more durable, safer, efficent, cheaper...

I can go on, but if you're mind is set on having them as an "upgrade" know that they aren't.

i have the stock clutch fan, AND a 12'' e-fan in front of the radiator, only reason is because i had it laying around so i figured why not. but im not going to rely on a single e-fan to cool this monster.

when i went to the drag strip and raced i had this same problem.. ended up being the turbo. it was a ct 60-1 turbo.. not sure what turbo your running or how old it is.. just somthing to check

new toy!! i got lucky andgot a bunch of fans from my junkyard's all you can carry sale. can anyone guess which car this is from? it should fit almost perfect on our rad and seems to pull almost as much air as the famous Taurus fans (i have some forsale btw in the FS section) These fans measure 12" and have a low setting. to switch to high all you have to do is supply another 12v to the second wire.

don't worry i dont believe in having just a switch. i plan on doing thermostat as well as manual override. :icon_bigg

yea thats what i have been told.. i have also been told its not safe to boost a NA motor. we'll see how it goes, ill keep you guys updated. i'll always have my stock clutch setup in my basement in case things just dont work out.

yea i agree with you, i was thinking of adding a smaller pusher fan up front that i will have hooked up as the ac fan.

its a newer rebuilt turbo. i have probably about 2-3k on it now

i would be worried how much amps the twin fans will draw from the alternator...

should go look at the mr2 alternator swap, that way you wont be running off your battery with the fans on.

Conversion of energy isn't 100% efficent, so converting mechanical energy into electricity then back to mechanical is going to have more loss than the mechanical driving the mechanical.

Don't be surprised if you LOSE power when the fans are on...

you guys are so persistent about not using e-fans. stop raining on my parade. :cry: i know its not the best idea, but i know it can be done and work for what i want it for. i just want some postive comments and postive help. such as fan comparisons, info about certian fans to use, amperage ratings and how to overcome them with a new alt. so much hate in these forums. i understand most of your guys prefer mechanical fans and i understand its 1000000x reliable. i dont care. if i was really concerned about reliability i would buy a honda... o wait i have one of those :naughty: i'm here to have fun with my car and enjoy and learn with it. hope you guys understand and give me some valuable info. :1zhelp:

Was just replying to the bit of sarcasm you showed about boosting an N/A.

Not hard feelings, I just want to make perfectly clear that it's not an upgrade and be prepared to go back to a stock setup at the drop of a hat if it's required to keep your engine cool.

If you're going to do it, don't do it cheap. Most of the wiring kits I've seen if they fail the fans don't turn on while on an OEM setup if the system fails, they are tripped on. I suggest you figure out a system like that.

no problem. here's my plan tho. i will have the low speed fan settings hooked up to a relay and wired directly to the battery via 30amp relay and fuse. and have it turned on automatically with the car. i will then have the high speed fan wire hooked up via relay to a simple switch on switch off thermostat that i will have wired to a sensor on the waterneck. i will also have a manual switch in cabin that will alow me to force fans on full as well as LED's to show if the fan is on low or high settings.

hows that setup sound?

I've had absolutely zero problems with my electric fans (Flex-a-lite from SupraSport) and my Fluidyne Radiator (also from them). Other than occasionally blowing the 30 amp fuse (kind of high, but whatever) because of the heat under the hood, it has worked flawlessly. On days when the temperature stays under 65 F, I can go from stop light to stop light with the fans off and the stock needle won't budge (found that out the first time the fan fuse blew ;) ). With the fans on I've never had a problem overheating, it looks extremely nice and I know it stays cooler.

i drew out a wiring schematic on how i will setup my fans. each fuse will be a 20amp. each relay will be a 30amp. and the diodes are there so i dont have any weird electric circles. I'm no electrical engineer so please bear with my drawing. lemme know if you guys see anything wrong.
