I went to burp my system today because i had just replaced the radiator cap and had noticed that the coolant had been going to the overflow bottle when turned off and returning to the radiator when the car is turned on....Anyways i turned the car on with the radiator cap off and the coolant in the radiator started to rise and overfill the radiator and also while doing so the coolant started to Foam a little...Anyone have any ideas to what is causing this?

I have searched but couldn't find any thread specifically dealing with this

Two things come to mind: 1) a clogged radiator and 2) your thermostat is stuck open.

The coolant really shouldn't flow with the engine cold because the thermostat is closed. If your coolant is flowing when the engine is cold, your thermostat is stuck open.

Because water expands when heated, it's normal for a little to go into the overflow tank when the car is hot. It returns to the system when it cools down and the water shrinks.

Its supposed to rise as it heats up, and there shouldnt be a need for burping the system when you replace the radiator cap, since its at the top of the system and air comes up there naturally, just top it off.
