Hi everyone! As some of you know, I just repaired a BHG about 2 weeks ago. I'm guessing the heater core sustained damage when the BHG happened and is now leaking. I have been hunting this coolant leak for about a week now and just found it today. It's leaking just enough to wet the carpet slightly.

I have never changed one before and a quick check of the TSRM didn't reveal the heater core location.

Here are my questions:

How difficult is it to change and what is the approximate job time?
Where have y'all been purchasing heater cores from? (please don't say Toyota!) :D
Could it be something other than the heater core leaking behind the center console/dash?

Thanks...
-Kenny

I recently did a complete tear down of my donor Supra. I believe you would have to remove dash ans even the dash support to R&R the heater core. Keep in mind I was stripping a car, so I didn't bother to read my shop manual.

I do hope there is an easier way. But from what I saw that was the only safe way ( keeping new core unbent etc ) to install it.

Good Luck to you Kenny, or should I sat I hope you are blessed with an inordinate amount of patience.

you can bypass it for now if you need to use the car before you have time to fix it, bad idea to drive with it like that, you will get air into the system

Could be the extension pipes used on the LHD cars as well...

Are these extension pipes something I can check without pulling out the dash?

Is there anything else I should check before I remove the dash or while the dash is out?

Thanks for the suggestion; but, I think I'd rather fix it while the weather is half way decent. It'll be turning cold here soon and I won't want to fix it then. Plus, I'll be wanting HEAT!!!!!!! :biglaugh:

Ok. I just thought of something. I have the temperature control set to 65 currently. Does that mean that there is NO coolant passing through the heater core?

If there's nothing passing through the core with it set to 65, then what could it be?

I guess I'm thinking of the good ol chevy days where the temperature control was connected to a valve via a cable and the valve controlled how much coolant made it to the heater core.
