im debating whether to build my 7m or swaping a 1j, im leaning toward the jz and have been doing alot of research and i was wondering what things should be done to the 1j before it goes in, like in the way of preventative maintenance. IE on the 7m re torque the head and things like that.
i plan on doing all the seals, but are there any other things that should be done.
thanks for the help

also, does anyone know what a stock 1jz runs in a quarter? how much quicker is it than a stock 7m? and what is stock boost for i 1j? when modding a 1j what is the weak link, fuel cut, or something else?

Gotta replace the caps in the 1J ecu because they have a high failure rate. One day your car is running, the next it won't start. Replacing them is not expensive or hard though.

If you need any help with the swap, let me know, I live in northeast CT and I've done a couple of 1j swaps.

100-110 traps is normal for a bpu 1j..

the weak link is the twins really.. as far as things to do before the swap.... have the ecu looked over and make sure nothing is wrong with it before putting it in. Other then that 1js are damn good engines.. Fun to drive too

best thing to do would be to send your ecu to driftmotion and have them replace the caps. They tend to go bad with no warnings..

OT: Jono is your supra gennas old car? it looks nearly identical...

I don't know what most of the guys in America do, but these are the things I would do with the engine being out

2JZ water pump, Get rid of the fuel line dampner, replace tensioner pulley of course the valve cover seals if you have the harness strip off all the electrical tape check for damaged wires (usually the coil pack wires are hardened and cracked) re-wrap the whole harness after repairs are made, replace all the vacuum hoses and coolant hoses they tend to blow eventually, pull all the sensors check them and clean them (especially the temp sensor in the manifold it is usally coated in carbon) it is also a good time to check the turbos but that should cover the basics...

great motor, you'll love it. Not as torquey as the 7M, but you won't stare at your oil pressure & coolant temp gauges either. I'll never own a 7M again....

jono, thanks for the offer, ill probably talk to you come spring time, because thats when i will be doing the swap. i do love the torque of my 7m, but as soon as i got it i found myself rebuilding my bottom end, and now im pretty sure my rings are on the way out, good news is a have a newly rebuilt ct26 to replace the twins. having experience with 1j swaps, would you reccomend a clip or motor? keeping in mind im a broke college student..

engine set is cheaper.. but you have to source out a few parts for it though.. clip is easiest, but more money of course

but after all the parts are sourced does it end up being more expensive, since a clip comes with almost everything you need?

no. engine set is cheaper like i said.

An engine set can be had through a reputable dealer (like jhot) for ~ 2k-2.3k shipped. Comes with pretty much everything (engine, trans, ecu, harness. all sensors, intercooler pipes, intercooler, intake) but is missing things like hydrofan, radiator, ps reservoir, hydrofan ecu. usually cost ~ 500 depending on the route you take..

Clips usually run ~ 3k shipped at the cheapest, but all you have to do is pretty much drop it in..

so 2500-2800 vs 3k at the cheapest..

So if you have time and patients to find the parts or short on cash the engineset is the way to go.. But if you need it quickly and have the extra dough, the clip is worth it.

Some dealers will let you 'buy' the clip and pull anything you want from it. That's the way I did it. Got everything I wanted for the swap plus more for $2800 from JDMexchange in philly. Since I didn't take the whole clip, I was able to put everything in the back of my truck and save on having it shipped too.

A friend of mine got his for I think $1800 or so I think from JHot and we were able to have it running using whatever parts we could get together without spending too much more.

So there is definitely a big range in cost out there. Stick with an importer with a good rep and your all set though.

Well if its any consolation there's a video on youtube of the 7m proving it to be a halfway decent grill.. Just an idea if you cant get any money for it.
