Well, I am at the point of no return on the car. The engine bay is stripped and the car is ready for paint. I am looking to do a color change from red to black or charcoal grey.

However, I am hesitant on changing colors. There is SO much red on this car. I have the interior stripped and there is red in places that I am surprised that the factory would have colored. To do it right, it is going to require pulling the dash, headliner, and rear harness, which I was trying to avoid.

My painter is going to charge about $1800 more for a color change vs. keeping it the same color. Even then, I think it might be darned impossible to cover all the red on the car. I am somewhat of a perfectionist and if I ever see red again, even in a hidden area, it will bother me.

I have found a black (grey interior) 88 NA auto hardtop that I think I can get for $1500. It looks clean from the pictures and there is no rust in critical areas except for some light surface rust in the tire well. Drivetrain isn't an issue because this is a 2J build.

I am unsure if I should get the black one and transfer the 89+ items over from my current car and then part it out or just keep mine and respray it. I would repaint the black one with a nice paint job, but I will save $1800 from having to do the color change. The black one will give me piece of mind knowing its all black but I almost feel guilty parting out my current 89 because it's so clean and they are hard to find rust free these days.

What do you guys think?

Here is my build thread for those who haven't seen it. The stripped pictures are on the last page of the thread.

Also, if anyone is interested in the red shell, lmk.

I don't mind red too much but its a bit flashy. It is definately cheaper to keep it red for sure :)

But a black supra is really sexy. Decisions... decisions....

I had the same dilema with my car. I ended up painting the car black doing all the jams, hatch, engine bay but not the whole under interior area. I also sprayed some black in the hatch area under the carpet and I agree I think I am a perfectionist probably not as much as you but as I put on my door panels and interior panels I was a bit bothered that there was red under there even though no one could see it, but when it got together I was happy.

BUT the thing is if you get the other black car and you get a paint job are you going to worry about the new paint versus the old paint in the jams, engine bay, and hatch area or are you painting that too? If you are planning on doing all that then I would go with the black car. Hope I could be of some help, I'll be looking to see what way you go.

Have you thought about Blue???:biglaugh:

I personally would keep it Red as well!! If you are that concerned about having Red somewhere hiden then Keep it the same color. I looked at your pictures and the car would need to come apart way more to change colors. Not to mention the fact that you would need to paint the backsides of everything like the hood, doors, hatch, ect ect. Way more time and money!!! Unless you can do it yourself it is not worth paying someone to do it. Just my two cents!!

What about taking care of painting the normally-unseen areas yourself?

Even for areas like the engine bay and door jambs, it is easy (even for a novice) to get a great finish. Just use a decent gun in good weather.

Even if you want to leave the jambs and bay to the professionals, the areas you are talking about do not require a professional's touch.

If you are that much of a perfectionist, then a black car just is NOT for you. A black paint job looks great when it is new, but two years down the road it doesn't look so great. Every little nick, scratch the car gets is gonna turn white from soap/wax/road grime. And, believe me, it will get some little blemishes if you drive it.

I also had this type question for my current build. I totaled my grey car that I loved dearly, and replaced it with a Red shell. I wanted this car grey so bad, but had your same concerns. Mine is staying RED (like my PS'd sig (thanks Dugums)). My vote is STAY Red!

since your a perfectionist i say paint your current car black or grey (which ever you prefer so at least you have new paint). black really stands out especially when wet sanded.

Mk III + 2Jz -Gte + fresh, Black, Wet Sanded = SEXXXXY!!!!

You have to pick your favorite color and that's it. If the paint is changed from original, and what you can see is perfection, then the other hidden areas will fade into subliminal. Besides, imho, red and black look awesome!!
