I'd say paint your current car. It's only $1800 additional for the color change over the price of the paint job.

If you bought that other car for $1500, then you'd still have to swap everything you want from your current car over to that car you just bought. We're talking about a difference of $300 saved. I'll bet you'll have more than $300 worth of your time switching everything over. Myself, I'd spend the extra $300, and save myself a lot of work.

Most of the frame of the car will never be visible. You can safely assume that the car isn't meant to be seen without the interior in place, so doing the floor, underdash area, or anywhere else that is normally covered by permanent panels is, IMO a waste of paint. Toyota painted that area to have it painted, and it was easier to paint the whole shell the same colour.

Do the door jambs and sills, hatch lip, and engine bay and nobody will ever know that hte car is a colour change unless they're doing major work on it. The VIN and vehicle data tag will tell the truth anyway, it has the factory paint code on it. It's not like you're trying to fool anyone, are you?

If you just want a "proper" colour change done, it shouldn't be a problem at this point. Do a good job of it, and it will be fine.

Is there any chance that by going with a car that is already black, you won't have to have it repainted at all, or are you really shooting for that "Brand new" look?

No, I would paint the black car with a fresh coat.

However, I am hesitant on changing colors. There is SO much red on this car. I have the interior stripped and there is red in places that I am surprised that the factory would have colored. To do it right, it is going to require pulling the dash, headliner, and rear harness, which I was trying to avoid.

My painter is going to charge about $1800 more for a color change vs. keeping it the same color. Even then, I think it might be darned impossible to cover all the red on the car. I am somewhat of a perfectionist and if I ever see red again, even in a hidden area, it will bother me.

I have found a black (grey interior) 88 NA auto hardtop that I think I can get for $1500. It looks clean from the pictures and there is no rust in critical areas except for some light surface rust in the tire well. Drivetrain isn't an issue because this is a 2J build.

I am unsure if I should get the black one and transfer the 89+ items over from my current car and then part it out or just keep mine and respray it. I would repaint the black one with a nice paint job, but I will save $1800 from having to do the color change. The black one will give me piece of mind knowing its all black but I almost feel guilty parting out my current 89 because it's so clean and they are hard to find rust free these days.

What do you guys think?

Here is my build thread for those who haven't seen it. The stripped pictures are on the last page of the thread.

Also, if anyone is interested in the red shell, lmk.

What year is this car again? An 89 or 90?

As you know, I changed entire cars but if my old Supra was a 91-92, I would have just eventually painted it instead. But moving up to the last production and rarest year and in black were the 3 biggest positives for me. That wasn't my plan going into selling my blue Supra but that's how it happened and I'm glad it did.

That's just me though. My situation is a little different. I swtiched from a running car to another running car. Later year may not be that much of a concern to you. And since the car is ready for paint anyway and you'd paint the new black car still anyway, it might be best go ahead and paint the current red car black.

Black paint is work. Its not for everyone.

My engine bay is still red and I like the contrast. Paint it the color you truly love, and be prepared to work a bit harder if its black.

My paint job is almost 5 years old, and not perfect by any means it still looks great contrary to another members opinion. I delievered pizza in this car for 2.5 years in all types of weather and it still looks good.

Chris, I don't think I ever realized your engine bay was still red but it's really not that bad looking. It looks like there was effort into making it look ok as opposed to typical engine-in-the-car color changes with overspray and dulled/bad paint from the previous color.

Black FTW!
But I love the factory red on these cars. Both are my favorite color. MMM sexy red? Or MMM sexy black.

If you have already pulled everything except the dash and headliner I'd go for painting the red car black. Just remove the last parts and you'll be getting a brand new car.

Black is the way to go :evil2:

Well, I let eBay decide the final outcome. I set a price, lost the auction, and am moving on.

The car will remain red. It will be resprayed, including the engine bay, but no color change. Look for me in the red owners section when she is done.

Thanks for all the feeback guys.....
