I'm sure this has been discussed several times, but here goes. Does any one have real numbers, or real experiences with differences in performance between the OE intake set up, and a cold air setup like K&N? I'm looking for stuff like "I ran 12.8's consistantly, till I switched, now I run 12.4's, or dyno pulls? not K&N's data, thats all manipulated. just want to know If I should bother for a roadrace car!

Umm stock is a cold air intake. K&n bolt on filter is more of a hot air intake. And k&n sucks.

The stock airbox is a cold air intake, the K&N kits aren't. Only bolt on kit I know of is from Weapon R, but it's for a Turbo car.

On an NA, you're not going to see much in gains at all.

Carl, if you're running 12's with an NA, I would just leave well enough alone. It would NEVER get any better than that haha. :p

to be honest its not going to matter at all. have you seen the MAF on the NA supra's? it's a solid metal door held shut with a spring. That's where your restriction is, it wont matter what filter/intake you have on.

well we run times like 2:21 and 1:56, stuff like that, we run on 2 - 2.5 mile road courses, like infineon, buttonwillow, Thunderhill, high plains etc. i was just using drag times to see if anyone had any actual numbers. it's like I thought, no reason to change it, just put it back together and saddle up. next race 24 hour run at Buttonwillow near los Angeles. Seems like fun till you actually do one!

Hey Carl,
We just spent two days running at Portland International Raceway, Oregon, this weekend two days of eight hour enduro sessions, running Rat Race thru Star Enterprises. It's entertainment racing, with a focus on driving. The field was light with two run groups of 10. Fun, but exhausting work. Van

I know what you meant man, just messing with you. From my experience with endurance races on GT5 (and GT4, GT3, GT2...), I know I'm not cut out for it in real life. I don't have the patience (err, attention span perhaps?) to pace myself. We all know you can't run all out all the time, you get worn out quickly...

Good luck!

The maf is a measuring device not a restriction.

People HAVE picked up power by switching to GTE electronics or going MAP...so it might be more of a restriction than you think.

false. you are putting a plug in your piping, a plug that moves, but still. any friction from the maf opening, pressure differences and turbulence caused by the reduced in effective pipe diameter will directly contribute to flow losses.

Do you have any evidence at all that this may be true? other than someone just making it up to justify their purchase?
Numbers? speeds? HP? Dynosheets?

Where did that number come from?

I hear that people be gaining around 10-15hp from the weapon r intake

That is what the screen is for. Contrary to many automotive myths.

I believe you are talking about the turbo MAF (first picture), not the NA Maf (seccond, left one). I'm not pulling from any automotive myth's I'm pulling from my fluid mechanics class. any obstruction in a pipe will effect the flow especially if it changes the diameter of the pipe. that's the last I'm going to say on this though, because it's not really too on topic for this thread.

It was mentioned that the Weapon R intake is a turbo intake, which would be more realistic. You're not likely to pick up more than a couple HP from an intake on an NA, they're fairly well designed from the factory...
