ok to start of i have an 87. my clutch went out. my friend was goin to do it for me since he has alot of experience with supras. he says he found it easy taking the whole motor out. well... no luck gettin him to do the work. i want to know how hard is it to do it without a cherri pick. cause i cant wait. im planing to do it myself. help me out here.

WELL... get about 4 feet of extentions. a beer or 2 (if you can drink) it shoulldn't take you more then a day to do it for your first time(if you do it right)
First take off the drive shaft(take a piece of chalk or pen or whatever and mark on the drive shaft and on somewere you can line it up after you put evry thing back on. Get a jack and jack up enought so that the wieght is taken off the engine(like one pump after it touches) then take off the exhast, there will be a few hoses leading to the tranny, cluch line, and one other one(cant for the life of me remeber that it is thought) make sure ever thing is disconnected from the tranny. Now heres where is gets a little finky here is where you'll need the 4 one foot long extentions start with the top bots because they are the hardest to reach and if you strip them well... its not fun dont ask how I know. slowly work your way down to the bottem one the last bolt make sure you have someone else to help just ing case its not super heavy but it's easier with 2 people from there you should be able to figure it out your self if not shoot me a PM

I have taken the tranny down many times..... no reason to pull the engine.
I do pretty much everything he said but I also lift the engine up in the front after i have the tranny just hanging bolted to the engine..... it makes it alot easier to reach the two top bolts which are the hardest ones to get to.

Ya, I really see no need to take the entire engine out. If you take off the upper intake manifold, that pesky starter bolt will be much easier to reach. The starter was the hardest part for me.

The starter is super easy with 2 people on it. One guy underneath with a wrench on one side, the other guy up top with the ratchet and a bunch of extensions. Guy on top feeds in the socket on extensions, guy on the bottom guides it onto the starter bolts, then holds the other side with the wrench. Feed the extensions out the front of the engine under the alternator.
Doing it this way, you can drop the starter in under 5 minutes. Worth the beer to pay your buddy to help out.
Don't forget to take off the shifter from inside the cabin. Causes a bit of a mess otherwise, and it's a pain to deal with after the tranny starts to drop. Don't ask me how I know that!
2 guys can drop the tranny, replace the clutch, and bolt it back in in about 6 hours if they have the right tools and know what they are doing. It's a weekend job if you don't know what you're doing and use the manual.
PS: I wouldn't pull the motor, either, and I've probably done this a dozen times by now.

Pull the motor??? That would be so time consuming, get the car up in the air and secure then drop the tranny
6hrs with two people is hella slow ...... I did mine in 2-3hrs solo using an air ratchet, 2 jacks, 14mm wrench, 4 (2 long, 1 short and 1 medium) extension, 10, 12, and 14mm

Look up the transmission removal, and then the clutch removal and install. You will need some help dropping the transmission and putting it back in. Please secure the vehicle with some very sturdy jack stands and don't put them on the dirt. Hopefully you have a level piece of concrete to to the job or a garage. If not, make sure you put the jackstands on a piece of plywood or something level. Good luck, make sure you tell your friend to kiss your ass for all of the help he gave.

Your best friend will be a 3ft extension with a swivel . Preferably a 1/2 inch to apply the torque.
I jst did this a few days ago and it was super quick to drop it by myself. Max about 2 hours unbolting ds/assesing/jacking and securing the car etc.

ya for real. thanks alot guys you've been a great help. will start on it this weekend. i have all the right tool. all but a transmission stand. will keep you posted on my progress. i worked on alot of cars. for some reason i get intimidated w/supras. its all good im up for the challenge.
The tranny jack will help a ton when putting it back in, but for taking it out its not required.
I used a trolly jack and a small piece of wood for a little extra jack surface. Having a few helpers will help IMMENSELY when withdrawing it from the engine.

Remember to follow the TSRM to the T.
Failure to reassemble the throwout bearing assembly properly will cause it to fail.
I used a tranny jack on mine, harbor freight has a nice cheap one that works awesome.

kool. my friend said something about the throw out bearing. something about taking it to a shop to have it put in or somethin. i dont know. all i know its coming out this weekend alone or not.
nope, you can do it yourself...
You MUST follow the TSRM to the letter, the assembly is easy, but one part out of order and it will fail after a while...
