Car starts but doesn't rev up

Hi,

My 88 turbo Supra has been undergoing a BHG repair and full engine rebuilt for the last 2 months. After a few troubles with the starter, then the cold start injector, I finally got the Supra to start.

However, something seems very badly adjusted. The car only starts with the gas pedal all the way to the floor. Otherwise, it wont start. Once i get it started, I need to keep the throttle body wide open. At WOT, the car revs to a dissapointing 600-700 rpm and is kind of stable. If I ever let go of the gas pedal, the engine slows down and stalls.

I checked the resistance in the TPS and AFM as per the TSRM and they are in specs. The CPS has not been adjusted yet (I did not set the base timing), but I put it in in the position explained in the TSRM. The engine rebuilder had tested my engine and compression was 175psi in all 6 cylinders. The engine doesn't throw any codes (flashes continuously). Setup is 100% stock. Injectors have been cleaned and flow tested.

What should I look at and for?

Thanks a lot!

I had checked the CPS and it was as the TSRM said it should be when putting it back in, before setting the base timing. However, you guys were right once again. I played with my CPS and moved it one notch, and now the cars starts perfectly. I'll set my idle speed and timing, then ROAD TEST!!!

Got to be a big intake leak. Car will still start and rev with booster vac unplugged.

Cam crank timing correct? Doesn't sound like it.

Or an intake leak.

Do you two not read? He said in post #4 that he corrected the problem via CPS adjustment, as suggested.

His symptom is not typical of off a tooth, and he said it was good.

I have a very similar problem 88 turbo, car starts and idles with no issues at all, however as soon as I blip the throttle at all it dies, I can rev to rev limiter and hear turbo spool and everything but as soon as I let off the gas the car just studders to a stop. Does it sound like doing the same thing will fix my issues since they are similar but also different?

No, sounds like a different problem.
Check for diagnostic codes, and also check for vac leaks, and check the connector to the ISCV.
But I'm just shooting in the dark here.

Your issue sounds more like a boost leak. Central FL huh? Why not come out to the East Orlando Lexus/Supra meet tomorrow night and we'll take a look. There's typically me and 3 or 4 other MK3s out there along with a couple MKIVs, SCs, GSs...

I'm in Lakeland, and would love to join but the car won't make it out of my driveway because of this stupid issue. AND thanks to the previous owner it's no where near in the shape to be seen by decent MKIII owners LOL. Horrible body kit and paint brushed on paint job... I'm not leaving the garage until either the limo tint is on or the factory bumpers are mounted back LOL.

Supraguy@aol, that's the weird thing while it's idling there is no check engine light or anything it just idles like everything is perfect, go to give it gas and you're going nowhere... I guess I'm going to have to tear out all the stock IC piping and try and find a boost leak.... I know the piping on the cold side looks good so unfortunately I guess I'm looking at the hot pipes... Lovely.

Another thing to check is the injector seals if someone wasn't paying attention when putting them in they will not go in right and leak like mine did, not saying this is your problem but it was mine.

Would I do this the same as if the light were on? Just use the diagnostic jumper box next to the battery?

Yup, jump T1 and TE1 and turn the key to on, but dont start the car.

Then count the codes. Its like morse, a long pause indicates a new number is coming.

I had this issue when my tps was f*cked on my 7mgte. Bought a new one from advanced for $60. Worked like a charm. Did you set the tps right? Error 51 is tps. don't touch the ac or throttle when checking codes to avoid false codes.

I haven't touched the tps because the guy I bought the car from said he was driving it and the idle slowly died and he couldn't figure out what was wrong with it and just wanted to move on so 600 bucks later I'm troubleshooting the hell out of this thing lol and learning a lot along the way.

He said the motor was strong before it died but once it died he could never get it started again this was also from a guy who attempted to paint the car with a paint brush and took the starter out because it would crank but had no spark lol
