Will have to double check, but am pretty sure my VIN is MA70 and is factory turbo. Might be because it's a JDM 86.5 (yes they came out factory 7mgte in 86)

I thought Turbo model didnt come until 87

And there is NO MA70 VIN that is a Factory turbo only Chassis Code witch is what you will on the firewall look at the door for the VIN if it is a orig. turbo model it will be MA71.

That is correct. What Japan uses for a VIN is the chassis number, which is MA70 for all 7M-equipped Supras.

Interesting side note: Japan never had 7M-GE's in their Supra, so all JDM MA70's are Turbo.

It didn't, in Canada/USA, however in Japan there was no N/A model. The turbo model was introduced from the get go.

Like I said, the VIN in Japan is the chassis number, which means the VIN for a Japanese Supra with a 7M-GTE will be MA70-0000000.

When people talk of MA70 or MA71 in the VIN, they are ONLY referring to North American 17-digit VIN's. Even other countries with 17-digit VIN's WILL BE DIFFERENT.

Don't worry Habanero, most people here will try and argue when I tell them I have a FACTORY 86.5 7mgte. US/Canadian cars aren't the only ones in the world :)

I think even the MKIIs have some 5 or 6Ms with turbos or was that few and far between?
Though non made it factory in US.

MA70 = Turbo and non-turbo Chassis Code

VIN is not chassis code. In the VIN, MA70 = N/A, MA71 = Turbo.

No, Toyota never ran out of MA71's and used MA70's or any other far-fetched idea.

Jeff

Ok, I figured I was insane. :naughty: I have no idea where I read that and got that idea... :nono:

Not to thread jack, but why did they switch between MA70 and MA71 chassis for the turbo and non-tubro's? Why not keep them the same as the VIN, strictly MA71-turbo and MA70-n/a? Not that I'd expect anyone to know what Toyota was thinking, just curious. :icon_bigg

They did it because it's the way Toyota does chassis codes. If there was an MA71, it would either have to have a major chassis difference (AWD vs RWD, etc), or have a different engine block (6M vs 7M).

It's like how MR2's with a 3A block are AW10's, and MR2's with a 4A block are AW11's. It doesn't matter if it has a 4A-GE or 4A-GZE, 4A is 4A.

I could go on and on, but I won't. The point is, all A7x series Supras with a 7M are MA70's, turbo or non.

The A60 series had the M-TE (2.0L Turbo Inline-6 SOHC 8-valve) for 6-cylinder turbo power.

Jeff
Wouldn't that be 12 valve. (Please don't ban me.;))
