i have fought with removing this damn tractor wheel from the axle. three slid off easily but the fourth is jammed. on the other axle, there is a key (?), a little square piece of metal that slides into grooves in the tire and axle, locking the two togther. is my problem in here, or is there any way to take this out and then remove the tire?

i've finally had to take the transmission out of the tractor so i can separate the axle from the differential, and my problem still isnt going anywhere. ive pounded and beat and pulled and used pb blaster, wd40 and all other lubes i can find. even heated the wheel for a while trying to remove this. pics are on the way soon

any ideas?

Brake fluid. Soak the ofending area for a while with the stuff. Best rudt oenetrant ever. Just removes paint as a horrible after effect.

ill try the brake fluid.

i had to cut the tire off of the rim...that took a while. now it's soaking in a gallon of pb blaster, we'll see if it moves any tomorrow.

craftsman lawn mower. i don't think its a snap or circlip on the axle anywhere since i removed the opposite one by prying an e-clip off, then the tire just slid off rather easily.

IF you hammer the axle with something steel while axle is sticking out of wheel hub still, you will "mushroom" the axle, thus making it impossible to remove wheel w/o cutting rim. The way ive done it is to have it soak a few days in PB Blaster (wheel/axle standing on end), Then have one person hold wheel/axle in air and using a 4x4 block of wood, hit axle using transmissions weight to your advantage. Them, once the axle is flush with hub of wheel, you can use an old 1/2inch drive extension to pound axle out of wheel hub. (also, person is still holding wheel/axle in air)

No, i was going to hit the damn rim from behind with a big sledge hammer. 1-2 wacks and it will be off.
Id love to see your face as you blow the axle out of the transmission.:evil2: The snap ring holding the axle will break, or cause very bad damage to transmission..........ask me how i kno.......:nono:.

lol, ive soaked it for a day in pb. im gonna take it to a tire shop and see if they can just mount the tire for me while its still on the axle shaft, then ill regrease the transaxle and get it ready to mount to the gokart frame.

gokart? GOKART???

pics? plans? thread?

i always wanted to take one of our old riding mowers and make a kart...

its just difficult with a vertical shaft.... but if you're using the transaxle and getting it geared/ setup for some decent speed, i'm interested.

cool. is having the weight so far behind the rear axle ever going to be an issue, or will the frame up front be sufficient to keep weight distribution even?

i wonder how well these trannys hold up.... i want to try and hook up for CV shafts if i can...i dont like the idea of a solid mounted axle. the ride would stink.
