Camming sound

When i get the car up to operating temperature after driving around for a while, the idle drops about 50 rpm from 700 to about 650 when i stop and put it in park. If you have ever heard a drag car that is cammed, it sounds like that but not so dramatic. Instead of the muffler sound i normally get, its almost like i can hear each cylinder fire....doesn't feel like its skipping.

This is a chevy 350 but it sounds like this, just put a ricer can on it.;]

my car chugged like a v8 when my sparkplug wires were mixed up...but if your car idles normal for at least some of the time thats probably not it.

this is just a guess but it sounds like a sensor is going bad or has gone bad somewhere, and it's messing up your fuel mixture. I'm guessing based on how it runs fine when cold but bad when it's warm...

have you checked your codes?

no codes. It's a possibility that is may be timing related, or distributor related....or vacuum. I remember putting it back together is was pretty darn close. though is does it everyonce in a while. and plus sometimes when i slow down/stop the idle drops low to about 475-500rpm in gear then jumps back up to about 650.

What do you mean the timing was pretty close? And did you check with a timing light with the jumper wire?

Tps, idle motor, timing. Check all three, but start with timing(easiest to check). Sounds like you have a low idle issue more than anything. Could be the dashpot isn't working correctly, or the little foam filter is getting plugged up.

What was close, btw? Timing marks(cams and crank), distributor position?

All: The timing was 10 btdc with a timing light with the jumper, and the vacuum lines is what i ment. sorry for that:] But i will say when i put the motor back together i could never get the distributor centered with the timing adjustment screw on the distributor/head. And when i turn off the car and it completely shuts off 2 seconds after, i hear a click-ooh-click-ooh-click noise...in that order....dunno what it is though.

Cuel: I checked the filter for the dashpot, looks new and clean.

The clicking noise when you shut the car off is more than likely the isc valve setting itself(its supposed to do that), so it "should" be working. As far as the timing, it(distributor bolt to head) probably won't sit centered when you set the timing. The most important thing is that it's set correctly with the light, which you've said is fine. I figured the TPS would be messed up...well actually could it be the wiring to it?

Plus would that make the camming noise?....I mean the idle isn't effected when it's making that noise except it drops about 50 rpms. The needle doesn't jump staying constant....just sounds like it has a slightly barely noticeable woowoowooowoowoowooo noise instead of a constant woooooooooooooooooo. maybe it's the crappy muffler....

With the idle dropping that low, it's gonna sound like that. The wiring is a very good possibility. I've had trouble with my own, as the lock part of the harness connector is broke(if you look close at any pics I've put up, its zip tied ). I've also had the wires back out of the connector, which is a little more difficult to fix. I had to pull the wires out one at a time, open up the locking tab a bit, then reinstall them into the connector. Usually when that happens, though, the car won't run right. I got the tps from a local parts store for around $90, iirc. It was a Toyota part, to

But seriously, check out the build i'm doing in my sig, the 87, every clip was broken on the harness, except the vsv's etc.....all held together with zip ties.

Zip Ties FTW.

Ok now i know normal price range. i can wheel and deal now!

OH and while i'm here, i noticed that when i put it in gear, turn on the lights, use any application,hit brakes(abs), my lights dim and the meter drops a little, then rises back up? is there a way to fix that?why is that happening?

Sounds like maybe you have a ground problem. Zip ties, never use them, I use chicken wire.

i used to use chicken wire, but it just seems a little messy. I would never use them on my car, unless it was an emergency.Now the 87 one i'm building, he told me to use zip ties, cause we would have to buy i new harness...

I remember my car sounded like it was "cammed" or it had a Subaru WRX motor. Well it not only sounded cammed, but the idle was very rough. That was when it had a BHG (or was going to get a BHG). Just thought I'd share that story.

i have a greddy metal head gasket arp 77ft/lbs. Still doesn't mean a bhg cannot happen. I have had the waterfall effect recently. Which some say is a sign of bhg.

Quin: haha i hope not...It could be heater core related, cause recently it has gotten cold here and it only happens when it has gotten real cold and my car has been sitting and has gotten cold also. Plus i started using my heater.
