SAN FRANCISCO — California sued six of the world's largest automakers over global warming on Wednesday, charging that greenhouse gases from their vehicles have caused billions of dollars in damages.

The lawsuit is the first of its kind to seek to hold manufacturers liable for the damages caused by their vehicles' emissions, state Attorney General Bill Lockyer said.

It also comes less than a month after California lawmakers adopted the nation's first global warming law mandating a cut in greenhouse gas emissions.

An automaker trade group called the global warming move a "nuisance suit." Car manufacturers have also held up California state rules to force cuts in tailpipe emissions from cars and trucks with legal action of their own.

The lawsuit names General Motors Corp. (GM), Ford Motor Co. (F), Toyota Motor Corp. (TM), the Chrysler Motors Corp. U.S. arm of Germany's DaimlerChrysler AG (DCX) and the North American units of Japan's Honda Motor Co. (HMC) and Nissan Motor Co. Ltd.

"(California) just passed a new law to cut global warming emissions by 25 percent and that's a good start and this lawsuit is a good next step," said Dan Becker, director of the Sierra Club's Global Warming Program.

Lockyer told Reuters he would seek "tens or hundreds of millions of dollars" from the automakers in the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Northern California.

The lawsuit seeks monetary damages for past and ongoing contributions to global warming and asks that the companies be held liable for future monetary damages to California.

It noted that California is spending millions to deal with reduced snow pack, beach erosion, ozone pollution and the impact on endangered animals and fish.

"The injuries have caused the people to suffer billions of dollars in damages, including millions of dollars of funds expended to determine the extent, location and nature of future harm and to prepare for and mitigate those harms, and billions of dollars of current harm to the value of flood control infrastructure and natural resources," it said.

Ford deferred comment to the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, which called the complaint a "nuisance suit" similar to one a New York court dismissed.

"Automakers will need time to review this legal complaint, however, a similar nuisance suit that was brought by attorneys- general against utilities was dismissed by a federal court in New York," the industry group said in a statement.

Toyota declined to comment as the company evaluates the lawsuit. The other automakers had no immediate comment.

David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research, a nonprofit organization that provides public research and forecasts into the industry, said it would be tough for the industry to immediately meet demands from some critics.

Adoption of diesel engine emissions technology or gasoline- electric hybrids comes at great cost and improving gas mileage also likely means smaller lighter vehicles, trade-offs that are not attractive to consumers, he added.

"These are not free technologies, they are very expensive," Cole said. "Most people are price sensitive."

In the complaint, Lockyer charges that vehicle emissions have contributed significantly to global warming and have harmed the resources, infrastructure and environmental health of the most populous state in the United States.

Lockyer — a Democratic candidate for state treasurer in the November election — said the lawsuit states that under federal and state common law the automakers have created a public nuisance by producing "millions of vehicles that collectively emit massive quantities of carbon dioxide."

Carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse gases have been linked to global warming.

I wonder how long it will take Toyota to move from Torrence to say, New Jersey. Of course, Toyota has made an honest effort to be more green. But they, like all other companines, won't just take it on the chin.

California makes all their own problems. Rolling blackouts, outsouring(to other US States), making potentional tourists like me stay away...

Just go there and try and count how many contradicting points are made in 30 seconds.
Those people are going to tax us californians out of california. you can cut it a billion different ways but far as i can tell, they pretty much want to make humanity abandon the region. Founded in 1892? What was the purpose of the Sierra Club's existance at that time, to stop logging, a major source of income for many families? Do the members of that club actually ride bicycles to avoid pollution guilt? What about dairy farms?

http://www.nrdc.org/water/pollution/ffarms.asp

Go there and see whats listed as dangerous. What if we shut down farms and become vegetarians? Malnutrition.

I accept my way of life with its' necessary evils, because it's logical. Its not logical to scare auto manufactures out of california and burden those in employment with supporting those on unemployment. Bottom line is that these types of people such as those of the Sierra Club are never happy. /rant

Way to go California! No other group of people has ever found more ways to drive up costs for consumers throughout the world. Fuck you very much, every single one of you out of touch with reality Californian environmentalists.

I wonder if they've ever considered the number of trees that are cut to produce the paper to cover the red tape for the pile of senseless and baseless environmental laws passed every year. It would probably make them shit, but then they'd be in a real bind, because they wouldn't want to use toilet paper to wipe their asses, because TP comes from, OMG, trees! Idiots. :nono:

Rant over. :biglaugh:

Wow!
That is just the kind of lawsuit Micheal Crichton wrote about in State of Fear, right down to the erosion complaint! News Flash, Co2 is what plants breathe. The more Co2, the better the plants grow. Can you seriously picture what California would be without any internal combustion engines? Rediculous as it is, at least now we see what the environmentalist goal is- total destruction of our economy and reverting back to the dark ages. Hey, that's the goal of Islamic Jihadis too! Maybe they should pool their resources .

Well, along with this lawsuit, comes the annoucement that 3 billion per year will be given to these nuts to "stop global warming..." by the Virgin dude. (What a fucking dumbass. Someone really got this guy going to have him donate 3 BILLION per year to this cause.)

Let's put this in perspective.

California passed a C02 law that was impossible to meet. The automakers sued them. Now the state has filed this countersuit against the automakers.

The ULEE's all cheer! Yay! We are saving the planet says the English Sir "fuckwad" Virgin... yet he has no idea what C02 really is, or if it's really causing "global warming" at all. (The best science says it's not, but there are plenty of scientists waiting to get ahold of their share of 3 billion per year to say anything that will keep the money flowing....)

"State of Fear" is fiction, but it's so close to reality it's not even funny any more. All we need now is more organized Eco Terror, and we would be there pretty much. (The comment about the ULEE's teaming up with Islam is not that far fetched... psycho's around the world unite, we have a new winner on the scene, the JihadULEE's, assured to convert you to Islam, and clean up our planet at the same time.. Yee Ha!

If so many people didn't move here, California probably wouldn't have as many problems. I'm born in California, but 75% of the people I work with wasn't. OK, 75% is a guess, its probably much higher.
