I lived in California as a kid, and liked it. Of course, I didn't know any better. In about 2 months I will be moving as close to California while not actually living IN California - Yuma, Arizona. In that area, I should be close to family, be able to get to major attractions in CA in about 4 hours or so, and won't have to worry so much about stupid environmental or gun laws.
Still, I have to wonder if some of the stupidity will cross over that state line and infect "us" there as well..

I don't think you're going to be that lucky Drunk. I'm in KY and work with primary manufacturers throughout the eastern US. The number 1 issue for all of them are CARB (Calif Air Resources Board) standards for formaldehyde emissions in forest products and building materials. Like the CO2 standards, they are impossible to meet with the expectation that a board containing a formaldehyde based adhesive will emit less formaldehyde than a plain, solid 2x4 and a small fraction of what the human body produces in a day.

The CARB standards have a huge influence everywhere because primary manufacturers in the east end up selling product to secondary manufacturers who eventually want to sell into California consumer and building markets. Other states seem to follow California's lead, in part at least, because it's easy to sell baseless legislation and impossible standards to the public based on nothing more than sheer emotion. The fact that I hear the word 'California' almost daily in terms of air pollution is a big part of why I'm so prone to rant about it. That said, if I lived there myself you can be sure I'd cross the border to someplace like Yuma just as soon as I could and take advantage of the best of California without subjecting myself to the worst of it.
