Built W58??

Okay, Ive been doing some research on my next mods and then all of a sudden it hit me that Im still sportin the W58 from my supra before I did the 7MGTE swap. So I was wondering if it was possible to beef up the W58 to hold roughly 500rwhp reliably without having to locate a decent R154 thats a good candidate for a rebuild. And on top of that I will have to piece together all the other parts associated w/ the R154 swap. Ive never heard mentioning of anyone with a built W58 and I think if it was possible, then it would be worth it.

What exactly are the caveats of the W58 anyway compared to the R154?

I dont know maybe this doesnt seem worth the money to most, but I hate buying used parts with no knowledge of their background and since I know the history of my tranny would prefer to use it as a platform. So any opinions or thoughts/suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,
Brandon

The w58 transmission is just too small. You could cryo treat the internals and spend uber-dollars having someone go through it.......and still end up something weaker then a stock R154. If you sit a R154 and a W58 next to each other the overall size difference is noticeable. I understand why you want to do it, but it doesn't make sense when there is already something that does what you want and isn't even expensive.

Im glad you chimed in Aaron, you have any idea what the price comparison would be to a built W58 compared to purchasing all the parts for the R154 swap and building that one as well? No matter which one I start with its still gonna be done right, no sense in cutting corners on a tranny. Ive been planning so many mods here recently and now it seems like horsepower might be the enemy of my W58. I hope that 57 trim doesnt flirt with those boundaries, as I didnt even think of that. Im going back to Iraq soon and Im hoping for it to last until I leave so I can come back and do all this work.

btw, any news on the 57 trim rebuild?:naughty:

Just wondering, why built a r-154? it will handle 500hp all day long, and most of them dont have any problems. A rebuild would be a waste of money IMHO if the trans doesnt need it.

I actually agree with CK on this, the R154 is a very strong and reliable transmission. Other then to fix wear and tear, a rebuild will probably not make it any better then it was stock. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". It has been pushed to 800+whp now. If you can get an R154 with 7m bellhousing, all that would be needed for the swap is a clutch, flywheel, slave cyl and a shifter.

The other problem you run into with a W58 is that you are seriously limited on clutches that can handle any more power then the trans itself.

I said 500rwhp for the W58, but if I had a R154 I would expect it to push much further past those boundaries, because I have higher expectations for that tranny.

Well, when I said built, I was referring to beefing up the R154(if the parts were even existent), I wouldnt expect a rebuilt R154 to perform better than stock, I would just rather do that for piece of mind like SS5000 said. I have a rebuilt 7m, so I would rather mate it to a rebuilt tranny. About how much would I be looking at when totaling the cost of everything for the swap minus the clutch and flywheel as I will be purchasing that when I decide which clutch/flywheel to go with.

Aaron, you got any of these parts?

I know with all those 1jz clips you get in, theres gotta be a decent R154 swap you can come up with...:1zhelp:

Didn't see anyone mention that you're also going to need a different drive shaft.

Thats true, but I already knew that. I have like 5 different sites bookmarked for this swap, its just getting all the parts....I dont want to chase down all these parts individually, Id rather find them all together.

a simple rebuild to replace the bearings and synchos won't cost you much compared to trying to beef up the W58

here's a good example, look at how much larger the components on the R154 are compared to the W58

it may a LITTLE as the gear ratios are different (slightly), not to mention the components are far heavier...

why you'd want an R154 in an N/A is beyond me as the W58 shifts nicer...
