First off, it's a novel to start off with, bear with me, it's semi-interesting!

Well, I guess I should post some pictures and info about this. We don't really have all that many 2JZ builds here on Supramania, so I thought I'd change that. I'll start with the back story.

In July 2008, my brother called me up at work and told me he bought himself a Supra. It was a 1993 J-Spec TT 6-speed Hardtop in Alpine Silver. Naturally I was excited for him, since he has wanted one for quite some time, and a RHD one, while not preferable to a LHD one, is a lot easier to get a hold of here in Canada, especially as far as price goes.

So, he bought the car, being a J-Spec TT, it has some niceties like the extra glovebox instead of an airbag on the passenger side, and the 3.27:1 rear end gearing, but it also has the smaller brakes, smaller injectors, smaller fuel pump... you get the idea.

So, I started off on the quest to better my brother's car, haha. First on the list: get rid of those small brakes. I ordered in a new set of rotors, backing plates, calipers, pads, etc for the larger OEM brakes. One of his rear wheel bearings needed to be replaced anyways, so him and I went at it and changed everything over in an evening.

He drove the car for a few weeks, and enjoyed it, but of course plans were made before the car was even bought to upgrade. To get a baseline for the car before any modifications were done, my brother drove about 1.5 hours north of Calgary to Red Deer, because he had a friend with a dyno up there. On the way to Red Deer, the car started overheating. He limped on a little further and then had the car towed to the shop in Red Deer.

This same Saturday afternoon, I get a call at work... I need a new water pump, things leaking all over the place. Now because a set of HKS cams and timing belt, etc was already ordered, I had a water pump in stock for it already, so I grabbed that, a few jugs of Toyota coolant, a timing belt, etc, and drove up to Red Deer.

Spent that afternoon changing out the water pump, etc. The old water pump that came off had a crack in the housing, it looked like some cheap aftermarket pump, with a plastic impeller, so I chocked it up to shoddy parts used by some dude before my brother bought the car. Threw the new parts on, and got it running again, sweet.

Threw the car on the dyno, did a couple partial runs to check what it was boosting, and to make sure that the car was still running alright. All was well, so we let her go on the dyno, got up to about 5700rpm, when the car was making 270hp at the wheels (definitely respectable on an all stock J-spec 2JZ-GTE). Then.... BANG!!!!!

I look up and there's John (Stanzaspeed) getting blasted with tiny bits of plastic in the face! Plastic went everywhere! Coolant was all over the place as well. The fan blades had contacted the fan shroud... but why?

We drove back to Calgary that night, and Jason went back the next day with his flatbed and towed the car back here. I tore the front end of the engine apart again, and found yet another cracked water pump. What I noticed this time though was that the fan clutch itself was wonky. It had somehow separated slightly and was off balance. It was what caused all the problems in the first place, but it had gotten worse on the dyno run.

Not getting a full baseline in, but deciding that since we had the car back in Calgary at Jason's shop, we might as well start the upgrading anyways. Jason pulled the stock twins off, and I started prepping the engine to receive a new set of HKS cams that had finally arrived.

After getting the manifold made and the engine all back together with a new Koyo radiator and all the associated goodies (HKS timing belt, cam gears, etc). The car was started up, it idled nicely and ran okay. Revved it up a couple times and it started idling a bit crappier, then a bit crappier, then a bit worse.

It slowly got worse and worse, until it would no longer stay running, and eventually would no longer even start. Not knowing why or how, but thinking that for some reason the plugs had been fouled or something along those lines, I pulled the plugs.

Massive amounts of coolant in cylinders 1 and 2, blown headgasket for sure. Damnation. Stupid 7M's... I mean... whoops.

Towed the car to Toyota, figured I could book the car in the shop, get the headgasket done cheap and quick, and get the car back on the road for at least a bit more driving in the year (October 2008).

Pull the head off of the engine, whoops... warped block! F$#%!

So... get a new shortblock, build it again, get it going? Nope. Must build bettar!

So the parts list for the engine and car:

- HKS 264/264 cams
- HKS cam gears

- ARP head studs
- ARP main studs
- Garrett GT35r turbo with Tial stainless v-band exhaust housing (v-band to manifold and downpipe)
- Tial 44mm wastegate
- Blitz intercooler kit
- ATI dampened crank pulley
- Boost Logic billet timing belt tensioner bracket
- OS Giken STR2CD Twin Plate sprung disc clutch (looks so sweet)
- All new OEM timing covers and valve covers
- Epic Welding ceramic coated stainless exhaust manifold (my brother made it)
- TRD front strut tower brace
- TRD front and rear sway bars
- HKS Hipermax III coilovers
- Upgrade to the OEM larger brakes with all new calipers, rotors, etc.
- CCW SP500 18x10" and 18x11.5" Polished Wheels

- New 93-96 tail lights (97+ be damned, haha)
- New 93-96 Euro-spec glass LHD headlights (glass beats 97+, haha)

Anyways, I don't have all that many pics right now, but here's what I do have:

More pictures to come. There's quite a bit not shown in the above, like all the HKS parts, and the car itself, etc. Haha, but the engine is the important part!

Check again later!

As bad as it is, its kinda refreshing to hear a 2jz blown head gasket lol. Build sounds promising and knowing your attention to detail, this build will be sweet.

He is going to love that OS Twin Plate.

The only clutch I've ever had that was better is my RPS Triple Carbon.

If you need any help Jeff, let me know. You know how many of these things I've built.

If you want to sell the 97+ tails, or any of the other "stock bits" (i.e. - ECU, etc.) let me know - I may have some buyers for that stuff.

Well, the car never had the 97 lights on it, maybe I said that weird, I replaced them with the same style, I don't really care for the newer style lights.

I'll see what I have left over after it's done, not sure what all there will be. I'm not sure how many people want a JDM 2JZ-GTE ECU, but I reckon a few, what with the swaps people do, etc.

I'll post more pics tomorrow. You've already helped me quite a bit Mike, thanks! I'll be sure to ask if I have any other questions. :)

Okay, so it's a 44mm Tial wastegate. V-band to manifold, and V-band to dump/recirc pipe. Here are some more pics, I think they speak for themselves for the most part...

Note: even though the rotors are brand new (used for about a week), the car sat outside for half a year, no need to mention the light surface rust on them ;).

Yeah, most 2JZ's you see have excessively large turbos, IMO. This thing isn't going to make 1400hp. It should be adequate for the goals, but may run out of steam a little short, so perhaps a larger turbo may need to be swapped in. We'll know more once it's tuned, etc.

1400hp is a nice goal. where is it being tuned? and also is it going to still be a streeet car? or a dyno queen?

You misread the post, it's NOT going to have 1400hp, think closer to 600hp, it's not a dyno queen.
