About 20 thou is as much as I'd feel safe removing if it was going to be a performance build (ie:450+rwhp)

The heads aren't that thick in the Deck and you'll be getting close to the valve seats.

Took my head to get measured today... well it turns out that it has had .50 mm or 20 thousandths taken off so idk what to do now... cuz as far as i know it needs a really good surface to go with metal HG's! So I guess it's time to start looking for a new head :( this sucks cuz I was hoping to have my build done by october so i can make it to SILV and I am on a low budget! A new head is my only option right?

Personally i wouldnt go with that machine shop, they sound horrible. there asking you for specs? which in turn they either dont have a large enough micrometer or too lazy, regardless it sounds like a shitty shop....

now you say your on a low budget but your willing to put all your hard work and money on the line for this machine shop?

Look for one your comfortable with not just because one is convienent...

Well in their defense the specs in this tread aren't published anywhere so they would have no way to look it up, if im not mistaken, if the block or head surface isn't adequate, Toyota calls for complete replacement instead of machining.

I went to another shop in Santa Ana.. He had the specs on his comp but instead of waiting for him to look them up i simply gave them to him and he measured the head in front of me! It came out to 115.51mm and I told him that if it's past .020" that it can't be surfaced anymore! The thing I didn't like was how he had to use his converter on the digital caliper to find out that .5mm is the same as .020"! I just wish that the previous owner would have gotten a better surfacing done... If it were smoohter I wouldn't need a resurface for the metal HG! The surfacing was only good enough for a stock HG! So I guess my search goes on for a good used head :(

So your head has already been planed to the limit? If you're looking for a used head, absolutely positively make sure you get it hardness tested. The alluminum is very susceptible to annealing if it's ever been exposed to high temps (ie...BHG/overheating :p). Even if the head looks amazing with no rot around the cooling ports, it will crack very easily and strip out exhaust studs and junk. Just not a fun thing to get in to. I was lucky and found one on eBay for $140 to my door and it checked out ok (didn't know about hardness testing until it was in my kitchen :p). Just make sure you cover all your bases :)

I've never heard of a hardness test... Can this be done at most machine shops? and what is the usual price for it to be done?

Good machine shops will have the tool. Iirc the tool is under 100$ if im not mistaken.

And very true on machine shops having the specs. Any good quality machine shop will have specs on hand.

Your in LA so i would give aaron at driftmotion or jose at kiazen a call and ask them where they get there machining at. Both quality shops and people and know what they are doing. And there both vendors on here.

I have seen people go without their car. You don't have to rent the Shelby Mustang either. Any car will do.

That is possibly a little harsh, but not that far off either. The worst question I was ever asked is "Is that for the Land Cruiser?" Which isn't actually a bad question. There are more of their engines than ours.
