Mechanic just told me HG is leaking, had it done right before last time (Machined block/head with ARP Studs and MHG from Cometic)

This time, (CAR NEVER OVER-HEATED ONCE , not even halfway on the temp mark) but i figure this time the head/block should be good to go, get a new headgasket. Flush the oil/coolant and be good to go?

200$ for a headgasket, 2500+ for a 2j. + the mods i have in the car...

He told me that he was getting a lot of air in the cooling system... Said it rised with RPMS too. Hes gonna get back to me a little later.

Lemme quote what he told me

all i know is is there is alot for air coming from the cooling system into my funnel. and it gets worse with rpm.

I remember seeing somebody having problems with the cometic headgasket.

Quote from another user:

"i bought one from cometics a while ago, and it was about 140 i think for the HG... used arp studs, and had all settings correct, the seal was good to start, and less than 1000 miles later had BHG.... after pulling it to see the problem, apparently cometics has a bad stamp of gaskets, in which the rivet holding the multiple layers together is an 8th of an inch to far to the center, making half of it interfere with the seal of the head and the block... 78 ft/lbs of torque will make a brass rivet flatten out and put a nice semicircle in the head, and will cause a headgasket failure at that corner as well... go cometics!!! they didnt even reimburse me for anything and i couldnt get a replacement gasket out of them either for the troubles caused by their bad manufacturing, chalked it up to just another story of a company who doesnt care about customer satisfaction or quality products."

From what I've been told on here before, the Titan motorsports one you mentioned is just a re-badged cometic. I used it, but fortunately had heard about the rivet problem. HKS has a good reputation for being quality, but as you probably know they require a better RA than the cometic. I cant remember the exact numbers now, so i wont give you misinformation. Also you said you had the bock flat, did you have the RA (the roughness of the surface of the head and block) checked and verified? because your head and block could have very well been flat, but too rough. Hope that helps.

I don't exactly remember what all the specs were when it was machined. It was done last year, and i had a shop do it. Im startin to think they might of just taken my money. I told my mechanic to LMK if theres not head studs and a metal gasket in there, cause if not im startin a lawsuit.

Yeah, my cometic lasted about 15k miles, daily driven and a lot, of late night racing. I cant emphasize enough of the late night racing part.

Its been covered before, and the general consensus seems to be that using a larger bore on the head gasket is ok, even if you didn't bore you're cylinders. If this is incorrect please tell me, but this is what I have read several times on here.

So what your sayin, is i can use a 86mm bore headgasket, with my stock 83mm bore and itll be good to go? ... ? Confuses me.

haha i think thats just the nature of old sports cars, and even more so with the supra. LOL well yeah thats pretty much what i am saying. It going to enlarge the opening there, and may slightly alter compression. It is not optimal but either way it should be just fine assuming all other factors are taken care of. Namely the machine work etc. Actually i just read about this, here:

the relevant part starts at post # 43 and the next few responses should give you the details.
