The first thread I started about this can be seen here: http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33610

We took the 5m apart today and I took lots of pics!!!
We have several 2jz and 7m engine builds in progress so it was a good opportunity to make some comparisons.

The first part was simply taking the head off, but then came the head bolt from hell! :icon_evil
First I busted my favorite "chrome vanadium" cheap ass swivel extension.:biglaugh:

Then a Craftsman 10mm hex driver.:cry::biglaugh:

Then a "great neck" 10mm hex driver.:icon_evil

But then it actually led me to make the ultimate 10mm hex driver with a 1/2 drive impact socket and what was left of the "great neck" ::w00t::

I was triumphant, and it was a momentous occasion.

Ok, so enough fooling around, here's the pics!

left to right: 2JZ-GTE, 7M-GTE, 5M-GE

left to right: 5M-GE, 7M-GTE, 2JZ-GTE

That 5M rod is freakin long! You could call it "Rod Jeremy"! hahahaha
This pic proves that all the MK4 dudes really do have a shorter rod! :biglaugh:

Top to bottom: 2JZ-GTE, 7M-GTE, 5M-GE

The 7M block actually looks as strong the 2JZ. It has bigger diameter main bolts and thick reinforcements from the main caps out to the sides of the block. The 5M looks a little weak in comparison to the others.

5M-GE rod

7M-GTE rod

Looks pretty close to me!

7M-GTE pin in a 5M-GE rod. Same size exactly.

The 5m, 6m, and 7m cranks all use the same bearing sets, so the big end is a no-brainier, it's the same size.

7M valves vs. 5M valves

Is 4 better then 2? The flow bench will tell us soon...

Here's why the 5M-GE was a freebee:

Looks like the crank is going to live!
Probably needs to be ground .010" under, possibly .020" under.
Bad journal

Good journal

WTF?!? :biglaugh:

And you thought your 6m crank was an old design...

7M crank vs. 5M (2M) crank
darker color is 5M

A custom crank pulley will be required for this project.

:x: Lets hope all is good in the end so have you decided what your plans are high revving N/A M series power or a High revving turbo M series beast. Either way this has to be the most interesting build here next to Boso's I miss that bastard.

ewwww that 5M piston looks absolutely horrific, should soaked it in break cleaner so it would clean up a bit and make a better pic. I can't even tell if that's a low or high comp 5M piston.

other than that, very awesome comparison pics!

I think you need some stronger tools. :biglaugh:
Do you have a 6m Crank to compare to the 5m?

:biglaugh: We just busted everything in the tool box what wasn't Snap-On or Craftsman!
The 6m crank is the same as the 7m with a few less counter balancers.

And that makes a big difference. I'm trying to decide which crank to use and it's a monumental decision. 6M revs quicker, 7M revs smoother. Which revs higher and why?

what are you going to do for a custom pulley? I'm intrigued!

It's one of those things I will figure out as I go.

I called ATI today about a custom pulley and they said:
"Custom crank pulleys require a $250 non-refundable deposit to make technical drawings, then the pulley will cost somewhere between $600 and $1000 and will take 6 months or more to make."

I don't know what kind of crack he was on but it must have been good shit :aigo:

Time to go to plan B.

hehe, that 5m I gave you = 200k miles. I couldnt take the head of eithier, broke two craftsman 10mm hex.

Thanks for the warning :biglaugh:
I figured it had a whole lot of miles on it, because when pulled off the head and turned it upside down, I unbolted the rods the pistons just slid down the cylinders and fell out of the block like there were no rings! :biglaugh:

Aaron, that 5M block's main webbing looks *identical* to the early year (pre 89) 7M block. The later model (post 89) block is the one you've got pictured there!

Definitely want to get one of those :)
