And in all honesty id have to say i have done that 30- 40 times in my lifetime to get bolt off diferant cars. always the easyest if you cant get to something to lock crank down.

Well I'm trying to keep the car at TDC. I guess considering I'm gonna be taking the head off, it won't really matter that much........ in fact now that I think about it it won't matter at all. Boy I'm really gonna need help when it comes time to put this all back together at TDC though! LOL!

Not hard when you have it all apart you just set everything in line, the cam gears on the mark, the crank on the mark, then you set the distributor down in pointing at #1.

When your putting the distributor back in, how do you know you've got it sitting on the exact teeth it needs to be against to be perfectly lined up instead of being a tooth off?

If you haven't pulled the distributor yet get it on #1 and mark the base with something that won't wipe off. Once you get everything back together and everything lined up, it should be easy to get it very close sliding it back in. You should time it with a light per TSRM after you get it running, but as long as everything is on the marks it will start.

Well I already pulled my distributor. Wasn't thinking about it when I first started pulling crap out and I pretty much just started yankin, LOL. I know about where it goes though. I guess hypothetically as long as the engine is lined up at TDC, and the distributor is as well, it won't really matter where it is in relation to the gear that drives it.

If you put the distributor in on the wrong tooth, it'll probably still start, but you it will be obvious that it is off a tooth when you try to time it with the timing light. You just won't be able to get it @ 10 BTDC.

I basically was in the same boat you were in. I waited till i had the head back on and pretty much everything else put back on up to the trottle body. I left my upper timing cover off ( also had the radiator out still ). Then I used the starter bump method to get the crank bolt loose. You barely turn the crank when using the starter bump method. It was very easy to put it back at TDC only by turning the crank back like 1/16th of a turn.

Good luck!

Well I haven't touched the car in a week or so but I messed with it some yesterday morning. Got the crank pully off with a 3 1/2ft bar. Put it in 5th and went to town as was suggested. The motor did turn backwords about 25 degrees or so but I just returned it by hand back to TDC....(actually I just realized in the middle of my train of thought that I returned it back to 10 before TDC so that'll get corrected tomorrow, LOL). I didn't realize how much of a pain in the butt the A/C compressor mount was to get off. One of the bolt heads is really shallow and starting to round off so I skipped taking the lower timing cover off until I finish getting the intake manifold completely off. That's a pain in the rear end too! I don't know how I'll ever get all of these stupid vacuum lines back together in order!!! May have to rent a Toyota mechanic...

Good news is, I got my income tax the other day so as soon as I can get the head off, I'll be getting the machine work done immediately and buying all the parts I need to put it back together. I'm stoaked about it! :)

Right.... tape.... I don't know man, there aren't enough colored markers in the world to label all the vacuum lines/fuel lines/random hoses I have under the hood. Not to mention the wiring harness *sigh*....

WHAT?! LOL, I never said I read anything stupid in here. I just said this is where I was getting most of my information. This and a few of the other BHG threads here in the n/a board.

Think I'm gonna have to go kinda cheap on some of the parts now though. The ARP head bolts are the first getting scratched off the list. I'll probably just get Toyota OEM bolts. And I'm probably just gonna use the Fel-Pro head gasket that comes in the Head Set I'm buying from work at O'reilly Auto Parts. Unless anyone's had problems with the Fel-Pro head gaskets....

Okay well today I rounded out a head bolt. I didn't clean the oil out of the tops of the head bolts cause I looked at a write up someone did on here and they seemed to have good luck without doing that. Unfortunately, I didn't realize the oil was creating so much hydraulic pressure it wasn't allowing me to get the 10mm alan bit in the bolts far enough. I rounded the 5th one(in order of removal) out completely and started to round out the 6th one but managed to see what I was doing wrong before I totally messed things up. I put some off brand J-B Weld in the 5th bolt and I'm letting it sit with the 10mm bit in it hoping I can get it loose like that.

Yikes. The JB weld + getting the bit all the way down should help. Good luck.

I didn't clear mine out at all. I just pressed the bit firmly into place and that was enough for mine.

Okay well the knock off JB Weld didn't work. That crap sucks. Tomorrow I'm gonna buy some Epoxy at work and try that in the next day or two. Epoxy or liquid JB Weld are my last hopes for fixing it myself unless the Lord shows me some miracle cure.

ROFL! You mean I might be the first?! WONDERFUL!!! I don't know that I've ever been the first to do anything this bad before.

So a 7/16inch allan bit huh? Would a oversized Torx work better or should I try to stay with the 7/16 inch allan bit idea?
