Pontiac made a 454 small block.

Pontiac NEVER made a 454 small block (nor did any GM division).

Chevrolet did make a 400 small block however. That motor was used interchangeably (by Ponitac) with the Oldsmobile 60 degree V8 400 in the Late 70's 6.6 liter Trans Am's.

There is an after market crate 454 small block available for about $10K however.

I'll find my source in a minute.

EDIT: After rereading it, the article says the 454 wasn't a big block, while not specifically saying it was a small block. What would you classify it as? It was a bored and stroked 326.

right ?

Correct, however both are big block motors.

I still stand by my statement that GM NEVER produced a small block 454.

Wrong, 455 was NOT a big block. It wasn't a small block, either. My mistake on the 454-455.

I stand corrected. The Pontiac 455 was a unique design (nether a small block nor a big block).

Oddball motor.

However GM still never produced a small block over 408 cu in. ;)

I don't even know the friggin difference between small and big block motors. well...obviously it has to do with size...

but how do you denote what it is and how can you have one that doesn't fall into a category?

if there's a simple answer that is...

I know a kid who told me that he just changed the oil in his buick, fixed his headlights and redid all of the brakes, he said he bled them and everything... and then he popped his hood and took off his oil cap and jammed the dipstick in the valve cover! i just walked away.. i didnt even say a word to him.

Sounds good to me. If it's [__] this big its a small block, if it's [_____] this big it's a big block.

I am intrigued by the Honda w/ the direct valve injection NOS.

well yeah i know one is obviously going to be bigger but... is there a measurement or a thickness of something? or is it just obvious when you look at them and there really is no 'in between' that would make you wonder which? except for that oddball one of course...

like I said, heads and valves..

small blocks have all the valves side by side, while big blocks are splayed and oddball

hard to explain, but the designs are quite different

I still like the one where the guys hand got sucked into the turbo during a pull ;)

Gross i remember that shit! most of what was his fingernail just got mauled when the compressor pulled his fingers in.

My friend did the fill it with oil until its full thing. He came over saying his car drove like shit. So i checked the dipstick and couldnt get a reading at all, drained like 5 quarts, good to go. He goes to jiffy lube now.

then, to no real fault of his own, i think, when we did his clutch i went to loosen his bellhousing bolts and pulled out two rocks the size of cantelopes from his engine bay, and a large tumbleweed.

Honestly, i'd like to get a 6m motor MKII and test out its durability. I want to get a motor on its way out and see just how long it would last if i ran it on crisco. Or in this case, port the intake and exhaust with sand.

yeah... i'm sure you've seen the youtube or other videos of people running water in the crankcase in place of oil...or that 22R that ran with a hole in the block...

maybe try it with cooking oil rather than petroleum oil...

did someone ACTUALLY truly get their hand sucked into a turbo?
good lord...

the head one is a joke, right? how strong is the vacuum created by a car's intake in higher RPM's? yipes!
