Does anyone know the differences in auto transmissions for the supra? My friend ordered one for his n/a 87 and his new one has 4 plugs on the trans (they are grey) and his old one has three.

from what ive run into the sensors are just different and you have to swap them from your old trans to the one you just bought. if there is an extra sensor you've never seen it might be the abs sensor if you dont have abs or something to that effect

there is an extra sensor depending if you have the ABS or not....and I believe that the speedo gear changes sizes between post and pre 89. There should be one plug for the Neutral start (big round plug coming from the passenger side, you will have a small 3 wire square plug for the selanoids, the one more plug also a square, dont remember the function off hand. the fourth plug would prob be your ABS.

hope that helps

The GE and GTE trans are a little different on the inside.

Do they take the same torque converter (NA/turbo) ?
And along those lines, does the Mkiv take the same converter also ?

they use the same torque converter

im interested on how they are internally different... mine did seem to shift different when i went with an n/a trans

i can tell you if the 2j converter will work on a 7m trans in a couple of weeks heh.

So here is another question, the plugs themselves look different from trans to trans. One has grey plugs on it and are a little different did they change on board diagnostics in the years. Any insight on that?

The GTE has an extra steel and friction, larger piston to hold, and that is about it. The later JZA80 went with a little bit more yet.

So here are both trans plugs and the pans taken off between two transmissions.
The 2nd and 3rd pictures are from the new transmission. The 1st and 4th are of the one out of the car.

My AE340E is from a 90 supra with all options and has 4 plugs.

See if the old one has a rear speed sensor. A sensor on the tail shaft of the trans.

The Neutral Position sensor has 2 plugs and 1 plug is for over drive and the 4th plug is Rear speed.
