Wait. So how did all you other Cali/1JZ people get past this? There's got to be a way around it if there are shops like Driftmotion doing so many swaps and stuff...

I dunno, I'm just from Maryland where anything goes. :)

you smog your car and then do the swap ...duuuhhh!!!!. timing is everything lol
Or have a spare engine on the side to drop in for smog purposes. Not bad for once in every two years man.Removing and installing a 7m is a days job...

It is federally illegal to put in an engine that was not sold in the US for street use. It is just that other stats don't care as much. I was talking to a buddy a few days ago and he said that a smog guy he knew got 6 years in prison for passing people that shouldn't have passed.

The way you can get past smog is

- Do something illegal (fake smog)
- Find a shop that does not do a visual inspection and pass it on sniffer only (after some modifications)
- Live in a rural area where a dyno test is not required AND find a shop that does not do a very good inspection

For example, I know of a shop around me that does not look at anything. They hook you up and a quick smog test. This is a fly by night type of smog station and will probably be out of business soon.

In the meantime, I take all of my cars there :)

The other option, that most people use, is to drive with permits as long as possible. I have personally gone up to 8 months on temporary passes. When that option runs out, you sell it to a buddy and ride permits that way. You can often spot the 1JZ cars in cali by the red temporary pass at meets. Most people do not keep the car more then 2 years, so it doesn't become an issue for too long.

For me, I just smog the car before the swap. That way you have 2 years to play with.
