What Grim is referring to is the age of the rubber...even though the dampner may have been on your car for 39K miles, if it is an original one from years ago it is very possible the rubber is hard/dry rotted regardless of the mileage on your engine. You will have a hard time seeing it as well. He was just passing along info based on his experience.
He meant no insult to your experience and neither did I. It is usually price shock to those that go to the dealer to buy a stock dampner. The ATI is cheaper, much higher quality, and better balanced...added bonus: it's 5 lbs lighter...an excellent investment IMO, especially if you have a lot of $$$ invested in the motor.
BTW - I'm 49...been building/wrenching on motors since I was 16...2 kids...my son is graduating from college this semester
