I was going to post up in general tech, but figured it would get moved here anyways...

I was going to become a mechanic, but i then decided i enjoyed welding more, and if i do welding i can also make more, and potentially still do the whole automotive thing as i know how to rebuild engines already, im only 18, so im still learning, but i have 25yr old guys comin to me to help fix there cars... so i feel pretty confident. But i was just wondering if you are a certified welder, where did you go to school? any tips or suggestions for a learning welder? if you want to just send me a PM and talk there, on aim is also fine. just wondering... thanks.

It can be a very good field to get into. I am friends with a certified aluminum welder that is currently employed at the Hanford Nuclear Facility. He makes, without exaggerating, $25/inch.

I know ron has, but whats his name on here? I love how his last manifold that came up sold in what... 4minutes? haha.

And i dont think i wanna mess with nuclear... sure its money, but its bad enough with what i'll be exposed to, and i've had so many damn x-rays as it is... I would love to work for a shop that does custom stuff, like driftmotion, or a place like that... but preferably out of CA so i can actually enjoy the mods of the car...

being nuclear certified just means that you can weld on parts that are used in nuclear power plants. yoru not around radiation. if you take a normal weld that would take 1 pass to set it in nice. for it to pass the nuclear standards, you would say run a bead, grind it down, run a bead, grind it down. you might do this 6 times or more. its basically a normal weld x10 lol. lots of overkill type work. but they get payed good.

Get involved with your local pipe fitter, boiler, or steel union.

They will send you to school on their money, and pay you to work. Typical starting pay for most union welders is $18-26HR.

Was hoping to stay out of the union... i know the benefits, but theres also a lot of disadvantages too...

I'll look into the nuclear stuff then.... if you just do every over and over, then hell i'll take there money for it! haha.

Thanks for the into though, and i'll be sure to email ron. his build thread is crazy...

wow...i never thought much about becoming a welder. I love building and designing things... i'm currently an environmental resources engineering major... but this welding idea sounds cool. is it a pretty stable thing to go into with good job opportunities?

what are the downfalls?

sounds awesome...

typically welders have a shorter work life than other professions. My friend is in school to be an underwater welder in florida Says None of his teachers are over 35 cause they all get Parkinsins? I dont know if thats true or not.

yay for simultaneous posting!

----edit----

i would imagine it's entirely possible that being underwater for extended periods of time would have a toll on your body, due to the difference in equilibrium at depth.

i think divers in general have issues. all that pressure constantly working on your body...its gotta have some effect. although..Parkinson's? dunno how that would happen.
